Hi everyone,

New to this forum, but been playing Lock On for years, along with IL-2 and many more sims too old too mention

Bought Black Shark some time ago and finally sat down to give it some welly. Got a slight problem and wondered if someone could help.

When I launch BS, I get an error message popping up saying "This isn't a valid 32-bit application etc etc" (Sorry, not at my own computer at mo). I can click on the icon on the taskbar and it will run okay, but I wondered if this was causing issues with the game as it stutters quite badly, every few minutes, even though according to FRAPS I am getting solid 30-40 fps. (Not over a city)

I am running Win 7 64-Bit on an i5-760 and Nvidia GTX260 with 4GB RAM.

Would really appreciate some help as this issue is rather taking the shine off it.

Many thanks in advance

One of the general steps is to give Administration rights to the icon/game

As Black Shark is installed into the \Program Files (x86) section, Adminstration rights are always an issue

Hi Zoomboy, thanks for a prompt response. Unfortunately, I have given admin rights to it and it still comes up with the response below:

"Unsupported 16-bit application

The program of feature C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit version of Windows. Please contact the software vendor etc.."

Any ideas?

Sounds like the program has corrupted.

I would reinstall in a separate folder, not "Program Files".

There is this link if it helps to explain:-

Thanks for the help Accipter. I haven't had the chance to reinstall yet, so I will try that when I get home.

I did seem to find an answer for my stutters. I read on the forum here about reducing the resolution on the cockpit displays, so I changed it to 256 and I am almost stutter free

Will try reinstalling it in a different folder and see if that helps.

Thanks for your help

If you instaled BS in your programs folder that is your problem. BS is a 32bit program and has to be instaled in the x86programs folder.

This. Your CMD.exe feature of Windows may be damaged or may be restricted (of your using a business computer) - or other 3'rd party software may have installed components that prevents CMD from running normally.

Also, checking for virus - or past virus infections may be a smart thign to do.

Luckilly enough, DCS starts for you - but it doesn't not rely on CMD.exe unless you've made some custom startup commands yourself.

Oh dear

Thanks for all your help everyone. I'm hoping someone will have the answer for this next issue.

So, program working fine now, buttery smooth after the initial hiccups of scenery & texture loading up, had some fun with the Instant Action mode. Thought I would try a mission or two.

Got to Gauntlet and oh flip. Just way too much stutter for my machine. Frame rate drops to single figures and becomes almost impossible to fly. I am adoring this sim so far, but that has really put me off.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have updated my chipset drivers and video card drivers to 270.51 but these have not really helped. :(

Is "Gauntlet" representative of all missions?

Hi Everyone,

Do all missions run as poorly as Gauntlet or is that the exception to the rule?

Instant action works fine for me now, but I would suggest that Gauntlet is unplayable.

I am trawling through the forums at the moment, but I sure would appreciate some advice, because at the moment, poor frame rates are putting me off this sim, and also A10, which I very nearly bought last week.

No, the mission shouldn't be running this badly straight out of the box.

In light of your previous problems, I think you should get someone to have a look at your PC health.

There are several factors to check if you're looking to increase FPS:

- Excessive Software running, Bloat-software installed, past or present viruses, or software that steals too much CPU/GPU when you need it.

- Drivers for your mainboard, harddrive interfaces, GPU etc.

- BIOS config, poor configuration or outdated firmware.

- Full disks, and/or fragmented drives. (mostly affects loading time, but a sim like this constantly loads things from the disk)

- Corrupt Windows or system software.

- Device conflicts, too much devices on the USB / too many HUB's

There a section devoted to general troubleshooting here:

Sticky: TROUBLESHOOTING - Help us help you.

One quick tip - when you install Nvidia drivers, just install the drivers, not all of the 3D stuff & sound - not sure wether you get these options though.

You can clean out old Graphics-drivers using driver sweep (see the troubleshooting post).

Is the GTX 460 a dual GPU? If so, disable the builtin SLI while testing DCS.

Thank you very much for the reply, Panzertard. It is nice to know that it is just my system! That, I can do something about :)

I read through some posts and I have defragged my drive,

updated the latest chipset drivers and installed the latest Nvidia drivers. Still got some more work to do, checking out the BIOS and TSRs.

I will try removing my USB hub and disabling the Speedstep(?) in the BIOS as well as reinstall the Nvidia drivers, using driversweep. I may just uninstall and reinstall Black Shark as I have had issues with it anyway.

The GTX460 is not a dual core GPU AFAIK.

Btw, setting water to lowest setting is a good practice with the DCS. Water exist beneath all the landmass in the sim, it'll give you a nice little boost of FPS even when you're flying over land.

Okay

So, turned off Speedstep and C1 stuff in BIOS. Getting massive frame rates using the in-game fps counter. In the mission Gauntlet, I am getting between 25fps on the landing pad in F3 view to around 140 if I look up at my heli and all that blue sky. Averages between 40 and 80 in the cockpit view.

So far - so fantastic. However, when I come across all the AA guns etc, the frame rate tanks into single figures and I usually end up a flaming wreck on the ground.

Sigh. Here's what I have done so far - Removed stereoscopic drivers, installed latest Beta drivers for vid card, turned frame buffer (?) down to 0, updated chipset drivers, removed excess USB items, changed items listed above in BIOS, defragged my hard disk and reinstalled BS into a different directory.

TBH, the only thing I think I can try is the chipset drivers, because they stubbornly refuse to update properly. I am running them as administrator, but they all still say (with one exception) 2006 as a driver date.

Sorry to keep banging on, but I love this sim immensely, but I cannot complete a mission as it stands. It is hard enough to control with my stupid antiquated joystick, without things turning into a slide show.

So I have had a chance to do some checking and my dxdiag and tracks are attached. I would really appreciate it if some brighter minds than mine can give me a clue...:smilewink:

Update

Anyone?

Further info - against my better judgement, I bought A10 and it runs like a dream, far better than BS, imho.

On the ramp, I get between 19 and 25 fps, but flying I get around 60 - 80 fps in the cockpit.

These are the same kind of frames I am getting in BS, the only difference is that in A10, they are steady...approaching lots of targets, fps drop, but on a scale. Not 50fps>8fps>50fps>6fps rendering the game very difficult to play.
