Sinky Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Just upgraded from an old 8800GT to an XFX HD 5770 1GB ( Single Slot Version ). I'm new to ATI cards and would like to know what settings would give better performance, I've heard things like disabling Catalyst A.I can help in some games and in others setting it to max can help. I'm running the 11.3 drivers, would be nice to know what settings other 5770 owners are using in the sim and in the control panel. I've done a thorough search of the forums and yet I still end up confused with the control centre settings. I've now started killing CCC.exe and MOM.exe before playing any games, don't know if this is the right thing to do for every game. All settings high, water medium, hdr on, in game AAx2, tsaa off, cockpit res 256. 8 AF forced on from catalyst control panel. Ai set to quality. No broblems, runs great. -haukka81 Oculus CV1, Odyssey, Pimax 5k+ (i5 8400, 24gb ddr4 3000mhz, 1080Ti OC ) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Mustang Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 For best performance with your 5770, ensure that you have your anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering settings in your CCC set to application preference (use the anti aliasing provided in the settings in the sim) Oh, and check that your anti aliasing method is set to multi-sampling (you could try out adaptive anti aliasing or super sampling aa, but it'll come with quite a big performance hit, especially over large amounts of trees)
Sinky Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 Thanks for the replys. Hi. I have 5770 and i don't kill ccc.exe or mom.exe. All settings high, water medium, hdr on, in game AAx2, tsaa off, cockpit res 256. 8 AF forced on from catalyst control panel. Ai set to quality. No broblems, runs great. Tried those and I'm lucky to get above 20 FPS on a freshly patched install. Baring in mind I am doing my testing whilst taking off from Batumi and flying around the big city. For best performance with your 5770, ensure that you have your anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering settings in your CCC set to application preference (use the anti aliasing provided in the settings in the sim) Oh, and check that your anti aliasing method is set to multi-sampling (you could try out adaptive anti aliasing or super sampling aa, but it'll come with quite a big performance hit, especially over large amounts of trees) Yeah that's how I've left it, came like that as default and didn't want to start messing things up. Only thing I've changed is forcing Vsync and Tiple Buffering, which seems to not work for some reason. Main problem I'm facing is the fact that when looking around with trackir it seems as though the frames are not blurring together ( hard to explain ). It just doesn't seem smooth and the fps I was getting at that moment was 25. Those frames I can perfectly live with but it doesn't feel like 25 fps it feels more like 10-15. Le0kong Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 For the vsync you need to edit the graphics.cfg file(line 22) to '1', the vsync option on DCS don't work. On take-off from Batumi i get 32 FPS(default weather, no AI), in flight with the TGP-off and above ~5000f i get between 35-60 FPS. Flying low over city's get a minimum of 20 FPS however. With the TGP on the framerate caps at 45 too. Note that i use the 32bit DCS, and the GPU is overclocked a little, but it should not make much difference. CCC version is the 11.4 preview. Attached are the settings i use. Tests were done flying low over the city. Edit: With your settings but 512 display resolution and clear weather I was getting 25-30 and it was very smooth around Batumi even when looking at the city through the TGP. Thanks for the help. Hopefully it run's ok in the campaign with all that activity on the airfield and the weather. Le0kong Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 (edited) The resolution should not be making much difference. I never tried lowering the resolution on DCS (at 1920x1080 is already not much to read the labels), but on every other game i tried it didn't make any significant difference on this card. You mentioned it is a single slot version, maybe the fan is not so good, see if temperature is not too high (i get a 70°C maximum here). Another thing is if you changed the card without a Windows reinstall maybe the drivers are causing problems, or the cached files by DCS (ex: shaders compiled). But leave that for last or if a ED tester confirms the need. Reason I said what I said is that it was causing me problems in another game but I've tried it in my tests just there and it was perfectly fine. I did a full reformat just after installing the card, did a few tests then reformatted. I haven't checked the temps whilst in-game but I have done the odd alt+tab and checked and I haven't seen anything over 60C but maybe it had time to cool before I got into CCC. Sinky Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 Just managed to get some temp testing done, couldn't check it on DCS at the moment. I played BC2 maxed on dx11 on a nearly full server for around 20-30 mins. Watching the temps in windowed mode I never saw it get above 64C, activity never went above 50 and the fan speed never went above 50. I'm no expert but I'd say the fan is doing ok seeing as the room I'm in is also quite warm. ShadowVonChadwick Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 (edited) Nothing wrong with your card Sinky. Your performance sounds good for your rig. Mustang is spot on! Ingame 2/4x AA cost me nothing, 8x very little & looked good. CCC 4/8x caused a slide show with marginal visual quality. DONT use low shadows Try Full Screen ON & OFF. Vsync worth invesgateion maybe. Set all to High, 256/512 give it a quick test @ take off.(I fly 1200 over Batume) Try Med for Draw Distance etc ect....low only for water if needed. My rig does not like HDR. Just want to make sure I'm not down on power and therefore performance. I should also test it with HDR off, I never saw an FPS hit with my old 8800GT but it could have an effect on this one. I finally got to test the temps in dcs 2 days ago and even under 80% load it never went over 64C and that was all at 50% fan speed. It's been running at nice frames so far but it still doesn't feel smooth at 30 frames when looking around. It's not the jumpy jerky view problem from having low vram that I experienced on my old 512MB card. Sorry if I came across the wrong way, never meant anything like that. If my 550W can cope with my current components then my 650 will have more that 100W to spare, it's not much but it's the best I can do for the moment. My 550W has lasted me over 3-4 years my Corsair TX650 lasted 10 month at best, I'm very unlucky I suppose. Don't max out your PSU ever... always have some buffer Yeah I understand what your saying, the further you are from max power draw the longer the life span. Unfortunately there's not much I can do about that at the moment. As far as I'm aware my components aren't even topping out my 550W stand in. Also, am I right in saying the higher capacity power supply's are better made? Kuky Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 you can have PSU that are rated for more wats but they are not all of the same quality or efficiency, some will even rate as peak power which is not good, usually el-cheapo. If you see a PSU that doesn't have a switch on the back to turn it on/off it's low quality one guaranteed... also if it's cheap it's not that good... that's a good indicator as well.
