According to AFI11-202V3 22 OCTOBER 2010 35 document, anticollision lights and strobe lights are different

5.20.4. Anticollision and Strobe Lights. Anticollision lights and strobe lights are not the same. For the purposes of this section, anti-collision lights are the primary flashing light system on the aircraft intended to attract the attention of others to enhance see and avoid operations, while strobe lights are systems such as wingtip strobes or other similar strobe light installations.

I believe that in the Sim Anticollision lights are the Strobe lights in the wing tips.

My question is (in RW procedures):

How should I set the strobe lights (ON or OFF) when you are "In flight" between Take Off and Fence In?

Thanks in advance!!!

Well I believe in game Anti-colision lights are just that.. they are meant to flash bright light to others can see you far out... the strobe lights are coloured and used when close to determine heading/positioning of the aircraft (each colour is on certain side so you know where aircraft is heading)

There is a separate anti-collision light switch on the lighting control panel. Top right switch.

Here's what I've seen recommended:

At start until take-off: Position FLASH, anti-collision OFF

On runway: Position STEADY, anti-collision ON

Then off at fence in, of course.

I have found out how to squelch all external lighting except one.

Aft of the cockpit, on top, bright white. Lower right panel, nor joy.

One over to the left by the gear handle, no soap.

Anyone else able to extinguish it? I am tempted to roll inverted over a light

machine gun and let them blast it off...

Are you using the pinky switch?

Aft = settings via the panels

Middle = all external lights off

Forward = default external lights

I have used the keyboard substitutes, and found that "all external" off switch.

It didn't seem to work.

I had other issues over the weekend and just did a re-install this morning, full 1007

version, after nuking the directory.

Maybe my other issues, which on cursory glance are resolved, also held this up.

I'll take a look tomorrow morning, as I work nights, on a mission in the dark...

Almost, Kuky.

The colored lights that tell you which side of the aircraft you are looking at are the position lights, part of the navigational lighting system. Most civilian aircraft also have two anti-collision lights: strobe lights, bright white flashing lights visible from a great distance, and a rotating red beacon that is usually on when the engine is running. The FAA requires aircraft in US airspace to have at least one anti-collision light on at all times. This can be either the strobes or the beacon (and it's usually both).

The A-10 does not have a beacon. As per FAA rules, you can substitute the strobes for the beacon if you wish. If the strobes are too bright (e.g., in foggy weather where the light is reflected into the pilot's eyes, or when operating in close vicinity to other aircraft), the position lights can be set to flashing mode, which can suffice to meet FAA requirements for an anti-collision system.

Thank you for your answers pals!!!!

I think the closer procedure compared with RW is the one that I have seen in Savage 77th Sqdn. discussion forum posted by S77th-KonKuSSioN.

So, you can let the ground crew knows that you are starting the engines using Position lights Flashing. Taxi will be in the same way: Position lights flashing and Strobes OFF.

When you enter active runway for TO: Position lights Steady and Strobe ON and continue with the same configuration until you return to base and exit the active runway changing Position lights to Flashing and Strobes OFF.

Formation lights (strips) should be ON during all the time from start to shutdown the engines, changing the intensity to low/OFF for Fence in procedures.

Exception for the Anticollision lights (strobes) according to OPNAVINST 3710.7:

“may be turned off when the aircraft is flying through clouds (to prevent distraction of the pilot) and when the use of such lights adversely affects ground operations.”

Any comment form real pilots would be welcome.

Again, thanks to all and specially to ED to let me fly this outstanding A10 simulation as real as possible!!!!

PS: let me share an interesting document that I have found on the Net.

Did you make sure the pinky switch on the throttle (#1) is fully aft?

The external lighting procedures we use in the 476th vFG are the same procedures used at Moody AFB for real operations.

Ground Ops:

  • Position - FLASH
  • Formation - As Required (night ops only)
  • Anti-Collision - OFF
  • Taxi/Landing - As Required

Prior to taking runway/in flight:

  • Position - STEADY
  • Formation - As Required (night ops only)
  • Anti-Collision - ON
  • Taxi/Landing - As Required
