bluepilot76 Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I have just learned about birdstrikes from another thread... This is not really a "wish" but something that might be quite cool (although probably quiet annoying if it happened more than once a year...): How about other sorts of birdstrikes, for example windshield. It could be a big bang in one of the sections of glass, and the glass goes all cracked and hard to see out of, with a nice smear of red and some blood and feathers running back over the the canopy. It would provide a nice challenge to land without being able to use one of the windscreens!. Perhaps sometimes it could be in combination with a rough running engine, as no doubt some of the bird would end up going through one of the turbines. Anyway, prob best to get the AI / ATC sorted out first. Technical Specs: Asus G73JW gaming laptop... i7-740QM 1.73GHz ... GTX460m 1.5GB ... 8GB DDR5 RAM ... Win7 64 ... TIR5 ... Thrustmaster T16000m

The windshield is resistant to small arms fire, so I dont think that a little bird will cause any problems to it. ------=:: I FLY BLEIFREI ::=------
bluepilot76 Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 Good point Impact, Although I suspect that "resistant to small arms fire" does not mean the glass wil lbe completely undamaged, just that it will resist a complete penetration of the bullet. Dont know though. Anyways, my glass was broken (on the exterior model) just be flying the aircraft gently into the refuelling boom, so Im sure a bird could manage it! Well I don't know if the glass will break but the smell in the cockpit has to be unbearable, probably the pilot catapult himself. :D La guerra, asi como es madrastra de los cobardes, es madre de los valientes. Frostiken Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Regarding the bird strikes in the engines, honestly I think the best, easiest way to simulate it would be to simply have an animated sprite play once the game determines you've hit a bird. The dice roll, they come up snake eyes, then a sprite plays that shows a small black bird whisking by the canopy into the engine. You wouldn't be able to avoid it since the game already determined you hit it, but would at least serve as a notification of what happened. My first bird strike, for all I knew someone forgot to screw in a panel and the engine sucked it up. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Santini Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I've said this before and I'll say it again. Flight is tough enough without "bird strikes". The difference between getting hit by a dove and a Berkut eagle is vastly different. Advicepuppy Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 One 7.62x39mm 154 grain round: 2,056.3 J of energy One 8 pound bird traveling at roughly 350 knots: 5,8821.8 J of energy (That's if the bird was still. Add/subtract 20-40 knots depending on direction) I'd take the bullet.
AlphaOneSix Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 That's a bad comparison, the bullet focuses that energy on a small point, while the bird spreads it out over a much larger area, so obviously the bullet will cause more damage.
