I'm having problems with the early missions. Generally I'm tasked with destroying some kind of ground target - sometimes not even told exactly what vehicle(s) to destroy, but rather given something vague like "artillery". I can deal with improving my accuracy over time and such, but I'm having a hard time locating my targets effectively so I can destroy them and bail out, or reasonably locate and destroy all significant air defense threats so I can take out the targets at will after I'm done with them.

The AGM-65 is a great missile and the 3x/6x zoom with infrared imaging makes it easier to spot targets from a distance, but it honestly sucks for scanning. Is the only real option for scanning and identifying targets on this thing visual or using the targeting system of this weapon or am I missing some important function in the jet to find ground targets?

Ground targets are nearly always a bitch to find in FC2.

Scanning with the IR is the best option if you really can't see them, but know roughly where to look.

If you read BeachAV8R's A-10A Campaign AARs at SimHQ he points this out quite definitively.

I find this to be a major issue with my moving through the campaign too. For instance, on one of the A10 missions, it says to go for the center 80's. I find them on the ground, but before I do that, my auto-targeting locks onto the sam quad located about half a world away. For some reason, I am unable to release my target lock.. AHHH! After taking those out with guns, the next auto-target locks onto the fuel truck, then the truck, then ANOTHER sam site, further away.

After I take those out, I go back to my original target (the 80's) and take them out (with my 65's). Now, I go back to the base, land ok.. and guess what, my wingman didn't make it. I watched the replay from behind my winger and guess what he did.. he skidded across the runway and hit a building.. and yes, he blew himself up.

I have found out, its better to tell my wingman to run trail formation, because otherwise, all he does is get himself in trouble.

Real quick question regarding sam sites... If I take the radar out (usually in the middle of the site), does that not render the sam site inoperative?

Not necessarily - Depends on SAM site.

TELAR = Transporter Erector Launcher And Radar

Allows every launch vehicle to be autonomous as it has it's own Fire-Control Radar.

Thanks Viper! I did a couple of 'test runs' in the campaign to verify that the site was still active even after taking out the 'snow drift' radar, and yes...those BUK's are very active. I did notice that they wouldn't fire on me as quick (maybe due to the radar not alive to give out proper azimuth and elevations in close), but once I got about a mile away they fire at will. The worse part is, you get no radar warning that you are being tracked because the 'snow drift' is out.
