I'm not realy a computer savy guy, but I notised that sometimes when playing DCS ( and other games ) they seemed to be preforming significantly slower that other times , so i did a test using fraps.

I dont know how to describe it, but on a "bad" day I would get 30 fps in the cockpit view with all settings on high running the first quick mission in DCS. ( with some severe lagging ) , but if i restart the computer and run DCS first thing after the fresh restart I would get 60 + FPS and smooth gameplay, using the same gfx settings.

Why is this?, what is causing my computer / DCS to randomly slow down?

Hi mate! Its because the scenario accumulates debris and the long dreaded memory leak bug has never been completely fixed either along with unoptimized LOD's for objects.

I have a similar problem.

For some reason playing A-10 will interfere with my ATi GFX card settings. My AA/AF settings are set at 'App Controlled' but firing A-10 up will often break this and set my AF to 8x. This causes the game to run at half-speed and is very annoying.

sounds similar to the kind of problem I was having where ALT tabbing would gain back a lot of FPS when ever they suddenly dropped in game.

Specs: GA-Z87X-UD3H, i7-4770k, 16GB, RTX2060, SB AE-5, 750watt Corsair PSU, X52, Track IR4, Win10x64.

Sim Settings: Textures: ? | Scenes: ? |Water: ? | Visibility Range: ? | Heat Blur: ? | Shadows: ? | Res: 1680x1050 | Aspect: 16:10 | Monitors: 1 Screen | MSAA: ? | Tree Visibility: ? | Vsync: On | Mirrors: ? | Civ Traffic: High | Res Of Cockpit Disp: 512 | Clutter: ? | Fullscreen: On

or it's Vsync, because when it's enabled it syncs your monitor to refresh rate, so if your game cannot get full 60fps(maybe 55 in theory) FPS drops to 30 because sync with refresh rate

'App controlled' = Application = DCS A-10C Warthog

I don't have that problem with my Ati 5970 ??

Or his computer has accumulated alot of other garbage in memory from other programs. It can be anything.

ok, thanks for reply mate! I'll just make sure to reboot before crashing ;)

Did you test if BitTorrent running in the background while running DCS could be the reason?

Particulary when a download finishes while you are in the middle of a mission?

the windows OS is a bloated heap of *#£$ , and over time, invariably performance will degrade as process after process after process fails to either flush memory correctly, or fragments memory and page space so badly it becomes a question of IO throughput to the disk sub-system, rather than the main memory bus.

..long story short, get more memory (which will disguise the issue only for a bit longer), FREQUENTLY de-frag your disks.... have a dedicated and Fast disk for Paging, frequently reboot your machine, turn off any exterior real time activity while playing ze gamez (ie. realtime virus scanners, FTP / torrent downloading / seeding), change to a non windows OS (not really an option for us gamers :( ) or switch to a 64bit windows....consider restarting the Sim between each mission.

Just cause you don't have programs running in the background doesn't mean much. Press Ctrl+Alt+del and see how many processes you have running, it's at the bottom left hand corner of the processes tab, all that is running. Also a reboot clears everything that is left over from programs running. Like brushing your teeth, you brush in the morning and they are clean. Throughout the day you eat and they accumulate food, stuck in there. When you brush again they are clean again. If you don't brush, the food (programs) just sit there and build up. then you have nasty teeth, stinky breath (computer runs a little slower).
