I just got DCS: A-10 and had been used to playing Microsoft's Flight Simulator X. Naturally, I'm trying to get the controls to match as much as possible. I was wondering if there is any way to use the mouse to control the primary flight controls (excluding rudder) and mouse wheel to control the throttles as it is in FSX. This probally a really simple fix that is hiding in plain sight, but it's keeping me from flying right now. I've got alot of time going over the systems though...

This is the worst tech support I have ever gotten to this point with anything. If a staff member cannot provide any responce at all, I am forced to request a refund for this product that has been sitting on my desktop for 4 weeks now doing nothing but taking up memory.

Actually, this is community support, not ED's support channel. That is reached through the ticket system on the website, as per the "How to contact support" sticky: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=58801

Anyhow, on your question, I have never tried that, but I definitely would not recommend it even if it works. (Which, as far as I know, it doesn't - mouse is used for view (unless you have a TrackIR) and cockpit interaction.) This is a military grade study simulator, not FSX, and I doubt you'll have a good experience with a mouse for control. If you have no alternative mode of control (like a stick or yoke), I'd suggest keyboard.

If you have an Xbox controller, that can also work.

I would even say that if you take good care to express your issues the way you wrote your 2 posts, I'm pretty sure you will get a compassionate reaction from ED support. It seems you've just taken this "game" for something else, just a mistake.

Thanks for the responces. I've sent out a problem ticket, this forum post, and two E-mails. That was the biggest problem I've had so far; getting responces. I understood before purchasing the program that flying with the mouse control would be tricky, but I would make due. The keyboard I really only use for the rudder, and, although I've tried using the keyboard to fly the aircraft and could never get a smooth rotation on take-off, and always ended up scraping the tail of the aircraft on the pavement. Mainly my question was is there a way to fly the aircraft using the mouse. If this is not possible, then I'll look for alternative ways. Trying to stay away from buying an accessory, but if that is my only option, then I guess I don't have very much choice, other than to dump the program completely after spending good money on it.

One main reason. It costs money for a joystick. Frankly, $60 for the game was enough. Is there anything thats good/cheep out there?

Where are you from?

I have a working X52 liying around that I haven't used since two years.

(changed with BlackShark to a centerstick configuration and hacked a Hotas-Cougar for that purpose)

Maybe I can arrange something for you - this dependent on the shipping costs and...

...I want to be sure that you will use DCS titles for the years to come

...and didn't drop after few month -because you just discovered the steep learning curve.:)

Edit: Fly the Hog with the mouse?! - Do it in ArmA but don't do it with DCS !

I went into my cellar (just to make sure it is still there), brought it upstairs and took this photo 3min ago...

Germany...

It says it right below his name.

I guess you paid as much attention to the requirements of DCS games.

Best of luck with your mouse.

you can find a basic joystick for as low as $20 , even the most simple stick will add a LOT to your enjoyement of whatever flight game/sim you might be playing. You wont regret investing in one.

It took that long to stop laughing at the notion of flying with the mouse... Now that we've all regained our composure.. get a stick.

For future reference- posters who clearly are not even slightly serious or even interested in flight sims enough to equip themselves with the most rudimentary peripherals-- are not going to be taken seriously in return by most of the community.

But then you really made your life here difficult by copping that attitude- This pretty much labels you as a *several adjectives eliminated* young "game boy" user.

Suffice to say: Change your tune if you want any help here..

Be advised that this board is overflowing with outgoing people who want to help any way we can. Every single field relative to flight, hardware and software is represented. Real life A10 pilots, crews, weapons handlers, avionics engineers, software developers, all the way down to those who are general computer whizzes and love to study and simulate real flight... So-get with the program and take advantage of it.. or not.

Sorry if I came across as an angry little dude, but I was mainly annoyed with the lack of responces. That was my main upset. You must understand my position. Most of my money goes towards real flight training, mostly study materials needed to pass the written test. Also money goes into savings to pay for a car and future schooling. Being 15, my opportunity for work is limited. Real flight has a higher priority than simulation, and nothing is cheep about flying. Don't get me wrong, I puchased this program with full intentions on using it, but $60 was a stretch. You can pretty much rent a 182 with that much money. I had heard only good things about this program and figured it would be worth the money. It was certainly worth it, but I was just hoping that I would be able to make due with a mouse control and keyboard shortcuts. If this is not possible (which has been made clear it's not possible) then I will just have to find a joystick. I was just hoping there would be an alternative route. No foul intentions.

I'm pretty sure there is some uncharted LUA way to use the mouse as a joystick replacement. If you're good at it you can look into DCS/Config/Export/Export.lua as a starting point to inject axis values the way you want.

The sky is the limit, if you're ready to start here.

I've never seen any software opened to such a level of customization.

Here's what I'd suggest if you are on an extremely tight budget, which appears to be the case:

or

Used the second one when doing demonstrations in public - don't want too expensive kit when working passerbys at a shopping mall, especially since we had an actual airplane to guard as well in there. It does it's job very well, even though it's unassuming nature is such that I personally really miss my HOTAS whenever I'm forced to use something like it. But that's me, I say the same about flying without a headtracker.

There are also yokes available on the market which might be more applicable to you if you are working on a PPL with Cessnas as your training bird, but they tend to be a digit more on the pricetag unfortunately. I also wouldn't be able to help you select a good one since I've not tried any of them. (I fly stick both IRL and in Sim so I never had cause to try it.) But thought I'd make sure you know they're out there since they can be relevant to help you do procedure training with FSX or XP.

how about 40 bucks with shipping?

http://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Game-console/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311425092&sr=8-1

I do own it, and it served well, reasonably for the price...

Remember, a HOTAS is both throttle and stick (neve foget zat "quoting capt blah blah blah from Shilent Khunter 5)

EDIT: HOTAS DMS TMS BOAT CHINA HAT, blah blah blah need HOTAS WARTHOG... This wont cut it with 40 HOTAS commands except with assigning an ever conflicting (sometimes disabling) modifiers like ctrl alt shift...
