This seems to be a problem with a lot of folks!!

There is no problem.

Any definitive answers on what the deal is, or what I am doing wrong... or possibly a fix/ work around for the COUGAR is???

Read below:

Back onto the topic: did you manage to get the same problem as I did, with TMS UP and not having a weapon selected?

Re Combat Employment/Precision-Guided Munitions Tutorial

Tested with revised training mission pack 1.1.0.8. and had no problem whatsoever with GBU-12 delivery. SPI set as advised by instructor without issue.

I am fishing here, but did you confirm visually that SPI was set via HUD/TAD?

At default you will not have been able to visually confirm as your ingress has the target at your ten. You either need to cycle the current steerpoint to confirm on the TAD (wedding-cake symbol over target), alternatively turn to target and confirm via presence of the 'tail' from the TGP diamond in the HUD.

Ok... Well I am using a TM Cougar HOTAS... I am doing the navigation training, and I can't get the Lt. Ctrl + rt. up arrow OR the TMS switch to function... and I have tried holding them anywhere from 2 to 10 seconds.... no joy... kind of hard to move on when you can do as the instructor asks!!!

Re Aircraft Operation/Navigation Tutorial

Tested with no problems.

I am guessing here, but you are stuck at the part where the instructor requests that the SPI is set by means of the HUD TDC?

Assuming that I am correct, you first need to ensure that the HUD is set as SOI as explained earlier in the tutorial (Coolie HAT Up). Visually confirm HUD SOI by asterisk in lower left corner (Important as I think that TAD is SOI immediately prior to this step - could be wrong though).

Be that as it may, with the HUD as SOI you can now attend to slew the TDC with the Slew Control as per the instructors orders. When you release the slew, important to confirm that the TDC has properly ground-stabilized, ie the TDC attempts to properly compute the latitude, longitude and elevation of the point.

If the TDC is unable to, then the failed attempt at designation is illustrated by a 'X' drawn over the TDC. TMS Fwd Short will again prompt an attempt to designate. If successful, the TDC will establish the correct parameters as above and ground stabilize, indicated by the TDC clear box. If not, Box with X.

Main reason for a failed designation is that the location you are attempting to designate is more that 13nm away from your Aircraft.

In conclusion, if the TDC has failed to designate, you will as a consequence also be unable to set the TDC as SPI, in all probability explaining the issue you experienced.

In the Nav tutorial, move the TDC until it designates (lower centre of HUD) and then set as SPI.

You are indeed correct ... I am stuck at the part where the instructor requests that the SPI is set by means of the HUD TDC. The HUD IS set as the SOI and verified as such with the asterisk, as per the previous step in the instruction... I am able to slew the TDC on the HUD... though I am not sure how to... "release the slew". I don't get the failed designation "X" because I am not able to designate a point to begin with.

"Main reason for a failed designation is that the location you are attempting to designate is more that 13nm away from your Aircraft."

I kind of thinking that this might be my problem... I may be trying to designate a point too far away. I will retry this tutorial probably Friday (my next day off).

Thanks Viper!!!

in the NAV training mission, try setting it way down low in the HUD/ check altitude is correct

Not to resurrect an old post, but for those who followed the above but also defer to the tutorial and are still getting stuck:

Disregard your instructor's instructions when told to TMS-UP to set Point/Area. Face your craft's heading toward the target then hit TMS-UP. Why isn't A/P released or you're advised you may need to turn to target? It's dissonant with the prior tutorials where any time you needed to operate your craft's controls you are released from A/P -- that is likely precisely why some get stuck there.

I double-checked that the WP was set as my SPI on the TAD; tadpole and all, turning to target was what got me to the next step.

I'm having this problem also. I've just upgraded to TM HOTAS, but cant set TDC on HUD to SPI.????

I'll try using keyboard command, but TMS Fwd long should do it....or am I missing something?

Viper....need your help too. I'm having the same problem......I'm holding TMS Fwd long enough (2-3 Secs), but still cant set the TDC on the HUD to SPI.

Also just digressing a little. Where do I find my TM HOTAS T.A.R.G.E.T. software? I read somewhere that it should be in Start>Programs>Thrustmaster>Target. But I do not see any 'Thrustmaster' folder. My TM HOTAS is all installed and working....(except for the aforementioned problem).....any ideas would be appreciated.

You need to have the TDC very low in the HUD. The slant range is such that the 13nm limit of the TDC is below your nose so to speak.

As for the TARGET software, never used it myself. Do you have TARGET installed?

At the rist of being a pain - Thanks to Viper for advice regarding TMS UP - I finally got it working, both the keyboard and the Hotas Couger have a timing issue with the key press, they seem to want a firm press to activate, yes I got the LGB tutorial to continue, I missed the target, but at least after a few days of frustration I have got past that part of the tutorial,

I have dcs-a10 1.1.1 installed so will pass on the 1.1.0.8 update to the tutorial, I will go back to the NAV tutorial where I had the same problems as MURF7413, Seems to me to be a key/timing issue on the hardware, blimmin pain to sort. But will bash away at it.

THANK YOU
