kcomeby Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Hi, First sorry for my bad english grammar. I'm very new at aircraft simulators (like 2-3 days), i bought a very cheap joystick, i'm trying to adjust keys but the problem is i dont know which buttons in aircraft is important generally. Its logitech attack 3 and there are 11 buttons on it, as you can see below: There is trigger ofcourse and throttle. Which functions should i assign these other 10 buttons. Trim? nosewheel? flaps? Also from what i've read so far slew is important too. Should i use joystick's stick like "slew right = ctrl + stickRight"? (if its possible ofcourse) Thanks

I have an older Thrustmaster Top Gun Fox 2... I think it has less buttons. I haven't mapped extras on mine yet, but playing so far, it seems like the CTRL-UP function is used a lot along with trim adjustments.
kcomeby Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 30 views and nobody knows whats the most important buttons for an aircraft :(
Soul Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 (edited) Your trim and HOTAS commands are going to be your most frequently used commands. Of course I have only been flying this sim for about three weeks, so I could be wrong. And I am sure there are other commands others assign to their joystick buttons. I would start with your trim, and then your HOTAS controls especially HOTAS TMS FWD(left cntrl+up) and also HOTAS China FWD(V) Edited June 20, 2011 by Soul
kcomeby Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Thanks! Trim probably but it needs 4 buttons and that is a little too much :) Maybe top 4 buttons witch lctrl = trim top 4 buttons without ctrl = slew ? Nate--IRL-- Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 OK.... The 4 button on the top of the stick will be your main "Action buttons" (Lets call them Button 1, 2, 3 & 4) the 6 buttons on the base will be your "Modifier buttons" (Called Modifier 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10) So For Example - Trigger = Cannon Button 1 = Weapon Release Button 2 = NWS Button 4 & 6 = China Hat Modifier 5 + Trigger = Master Mode cycle Modifier 5 + Button 1, 2, 3 & 4 = Slew Modifier 6 + Trigger = Autopilot Modifier 6 + Button 1, 2, 3 & 4 = Trim Modifier 7 + Button 1, 2, 3 & 4 = Coolie Hat Modifier 8 + Button 1, 2, 3 & 4 = DMS Modifier 9 + Button 1, 2, 3 & 4 = TMS Modifier 10 + Button 1 & 2 = Boat Switch Modifier 10 + Button 3 & 4 = Zoom Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
kcomeby Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Thanks Nate, My joystick usually stays right of me, so its little hard to pushing two buttons on it. Its actually easier with keyboard + joystick because i can use keyboard with my left hand. So lctrl + Button 1, 2, 3 & 4 = Slew is more reasonable for me, i guess. What do you think?

It really comes down to what is more comfortable for you. Since your stick doesn't have a HAT, I'd recommend a setup similar to the one above, using the 4 top button to mimic a hat. However, you can use whatever buttons you like as modifiers for your new "Hat" (Buttons 1-6 on your keyboard for example.) That will let you have all the HOTAS control at your fingertips. Perhaps it would be best only to add a function to your stick in this way, as you learn them. I did something similar on my stick and it became second nature pretty quick. kcomeby Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Perhaps you're right. I dont know what half of your example buttons does :)
Soul Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 What Nate said, he definitely has a lot more to offer and a lot more experience than I do.
Machinist Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 You should do yourself a favor and find a used Saitek X45 or X52. Either one of those, compared to the stick you're currently using is like night and day. Without actual hat switches, you'll be extremely limited.
RAF74_Raptor Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I agree with Nate's and Machinist's recommendations to really enjoy the sim you are going to need a Hotas. I came I saw I got blown up by a SA-8:pilotfly: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] http://www.firstfighterwing.com/forums/content.php
Svend_Dellepude Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 +1 about 10 years ago (more or less) i bought my first hotas, a TM FLCS and WCS. That made a real difference to my sim experience. I have continued to upgrade my hotas park ever since because it just makes simming so much easier and more enjoyable. A flightstick without, at least one hatswitch is no good for anything. Nate--IRL-- Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I agree with Nate's and Machinist's recommendations to really enjoy the sim you are going to need a Hotas. I wouldn't (didn't) say that, if you can map all your functions logically to the stick you are doing ok. I have crappy stick too (Basically the one in the OP but with a hatswitch) and my hand never has to leave the stick for HOTAS functions. sledgeweb Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 How do you make it so you have a modifier key to assign different commands to the buttons?
Nate--IRL-- Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 It's all explained on Pg 19-26 of the GUI manual, "DCS A-10C GUI Manual EN.pdf", in the DOC folder of Warthog. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
jeffyd123 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 you're gonna be missing out on a lot of immersion with a stick like that. Using modifiers isnt fun. Take a look at the CH stuff. they are good quality and very reasonable. i7 8700K @ 4.4Ghz, 16G 3200 RAM, Nvidia 1080Ti, T16000 HOTAS, TIR5, 75" DLP Monitor
kcomeby Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 Thanks for opinions. I'm not sure if its temporary hobby so i dont want to pay too much for joystick. I'll buy a new stick if this flying thing goes on for few months :)
