ED needs to fix the JTAC in DCSW. They're essential to this module more than anything and as of now it is broken.

Nice plane on that gun...

JTAC choose designation method on its discretion. Mission designer cannot directly force JTAC to use the method he want, but mission designer can create the situation that will require desired designation method.

 That's IS the problem, how do you define a situation? What determines that the JTAC will mark a target with a laser OR smoke?

Just to clear some things up. The Laser, IR pointer cofusion is common and we deal with this all the time.

JTACs have three lasers at their disposal and they do different things.

SOFLAM/Laser Designator - This is for target marking and Terminal Guidance Operations (TGO). This laser cannot be viewed with NVG's, is a class IV laser (very bad for unprotected eyes). The JTAC will set a four digit laser code (PRF) which will match the LGB or LST on the plane. The SOFLAM has a laser ranging function available to the JTAC/operator.

Laser Range Finder - JTACs use this to determine distance to a target and from that determine position of said target. The aircraft has zero interface with this Laser. This is a class I, eye safe laser. We typically use the MKVII LRF, but just recently got a new one.

IR pointer - This LASER has zero to do with terminal guidance of a weapon and works in different spectrum. Imagine it's a Light Saber that works at night and can be seen only with NVG's. It is not eye safe, so watch where you point the thing.

Operations with IR pointer and LASER have specfic procedures with distinct brevity codes associated with each.

Types of Control. I'll save that for another post, if anyone cares. But realize that type of control is not determined by target marking or it's more of a tactical situation and risk assessment call.

Thanks for the detailed answer,

still I made several attempts and seems no logic in the selection of the JTAC

Infrared or laser or smoke.I keep checking the distance and line of sight to the target and yet.

I would like to know If possible, if the ED GUYS can know in advance when they are preparing a MISSION that the JTAC marks targets in infrared or laser

My take on this...the way it acts is in the code. What were the programmers intentions? There had to be some desired behaviour rules that went into the code, even if it was not achieved.:music_whistling:

JTAC is difficult to implement if we do not know what rules it plays by!!

I understand that certain conditions must be present to make this work,

It is very logical, but it does not work, the point is, suppose I want to create a mission which will be laser marks I can not do that, I completely dependent on the "mood" of the jtac.

I've sat for hours in every possible way to make missions,I can tell you for sure it completely random, there is no way to determine How the JTAC will respond to the Existing situation

As I think I said earlier in this thread, the next patch will allow the mission designer to specify how the JTAC should mark targets. Just chill out and enjoy other aspects of the sim until then.

IR is for where JTAC will be pointing at your target so you can see where it is using your NVG's.

Laser is where you are going to drop a LGB, but JTAC is going to use it's laser to guide your bomb, you just need to Spot it using your TGT Pod so you can get your Hog lined up for a bombing run in CCRP mode, making sure you are on the same laser code (usually 1688 I think).

Ok... my question is where do you enter the laser code given by the JTAC at?? I didn't see it in the manual...or rather I don't recall seeing or reading it in the manual on how to do this... :music_whistling:

A reference on where in the manual it is would be handy for me... and if there is a tutorial out there on how to do so would be good as well.

I've set up a training mission. A night mission with a non-moving convoy at the side of the road. A friendly HUMVEE JTAC about 1km from the target and in the logic I instruct the JTAC to request a missile strike and designate with IR pointer (to point out the target).

The callsign and radio freq are set ok when I run the mission and I can communicate with them and get the 9-line but while they do give a UTM coord, they do not attempt to designate ... at all. Do they simply not designate for a AGM strike? Or is this bugged?

They are only 1km away and appear to have clear LOS. Thoughts?

Is it an armed humvee? I think that laser/IR pointer is only available for units with large-caliber weapons. You might need to set its engagement mode to 'return fire' to prevent it from shooting at the bad guys, though 1km might be far enough away to keep it out of range.

I think you meant 'hold fire'. Though not doing so is fun to watch.

My TOW armed JTAC once destroyed four armored vehicles before I got the plane moving. Once I figured out what I had done wrong it made for some good screen shots.:D

Please attach the mission so that I and others can take a look.

I did a slight change to this mission last night which I have not yet had a chance to test today. The convoy was in the edge of a 'city' (an orange square area on the map, but didn't have any actual buildings in the area the trucks were in so LOS shouldn't have been an issue) ... but just to be safe I moved them half a klick to the outside edge of that zone. I changed the HUMVEE to a HUMVEE Armament (with instructions to hold fire) and moved it to about 0.5 km instead of 1km.
