You mean this one?

Typhoon3.jpg

That's an Акула (Akula, "Shark"), called "Typhoon" by NATO. Not to be confused with Щука-Б (Shuka-B), which has NATO reporting name Akula.

Armament is 20 missiles, 6 to 10 warheads each, couple hundred kiloton per warhead. There's only one sub active now though, and it doesn't have missiles - it's used for testing and development of the new Bulava missile system.

EDIT: I had a pretty big plastic model kit of this one when I was a kid. Fell in love with it after reading Hunt for Red October at like 12-ish, and since I was at the time in a model-building frenzy I promptly went to the store and bought a kit. :D

Russia is building a new ballistic missile submarine class called Borei (North Wind) for frontline service to replace The Dmitry Donskoi (the name of that last operational Typhoon) and I believe it'll also replace the remaining Delta class subs.

800px-K-535_Yuri_Dolgorukiy_at_sea_trials.jpg

Smaller than the Typhoons, but it'll still have 16 missiles for a total of between 96 and 160 nuclear warheads per boat.

I got the pictures from Wikipedia. ;)

Wikipedia should be taken with a grain of salt, but it usually gets the basics sort of right.

Back in high school me and some friends made a pact that if one of use becomes rediculously wealthy, we'd buy a 'Phoon and convert the missile compartment to a glassed-in pool. That way, we could park it under everyone else in Monaco and stuff. :D

Not likely to happen, but hey... If someone wants to give me a couple billion dollars I'll definitely build one. Can even accept switching it over to AIP instead of nuclear. :P

@EtherealN: Nuclear will be cheap for operation because it still will have enough fuel to run for decades.

Sure, but what do you think of the odds of any country letting me register a nuclear powered private yacht? ;)

You can anchor in the international waters, call it an island and declare yourself a nation and make that rule. Now its that big that it can be a country, smallest though.

..and then declare war on sweden!

are those two subs here operational? they are awfully rusted!

http://ru-submarine.livejournal.com/17486.html

Even the exercising machines are rusted!

What are the square panels on the skin made of?

Nah. All but one of the 941 "Typhoon" Class are operational, and the one that is, is a test platform, already mentioned as the Donskoi.

Rubber tiles for sound suppression.

I believe those two are held in reserve. Basically the reactors and sensitive stuff is maintained such that it is possible to bring them back if the geopolitical situation calls for it - but obviously not without a thorough overhaul.
