Mud Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 I've set an AFAC A-10 to mark targets with WP in the mission editor. Yet in the mission, he goes "no mark" when in radio contact. He's carrying WP rockets. I got his alt set to 21k feet. So my question: do WP markers have to be at a certain max alt, or could something else be amiss? rockyalexander Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Yup...gotta be pretty low to mark with the Willy Petes.
cichlidfan Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 21,000' sounds pretty darn high to be firing WP rockets. I am sure that they fire just fine from that high up. It's where they go after firing that might be an issue! :D ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! rockyalexander Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 (edited) AFAC planes in the sim generally won't mark if their altitude is much above 10,000. You can set the orbit altitude for 10,000 but they won't always hold that altitude if SAMs start flying. Sometimes it can be a bit less of a headache to assign AFAC duties to a OH-58. The heli will stay low. Edited July 31, 2011 by rockyalexander
nomdeplume Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Also AFAIK they don't actually fire the rockets to mark with WP, it's just a scripted creation of a WP marker in the vicinity of the target. I've never seen ground or air units assigned as JTAC/AFAC to actually line up a shot and fire a marker rocket. My suspicion is the sim requires the unit to have line of sight and be within a certain range (a few km max) in order to create the WP mark. You can get them to engage with WP by using normal CAS tasking, but they ripple-fire them like they would with normal rockets, so it's not particularly useful/believable. You also might be able to get them to fire a marker rocket at a predefined point using the ground attack tasking, but obviously that won't be as part of the JTAC talk-on process.
Druid_ Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 ^ this is what I have seen also. However, whats more unusual is the ability for a Humvee on the move to continuously mark targets over 1k away with WP. Don't quite know how they manage that. i7-7700K : 16Gb DDR4 2800 Mhz : Asus Mobo : 2TB HDD : Intel 520 SSD 240gb : RTX 2080ti: Win10 64pro : Dx10 : TrackiR4 : TM Warthog : ASUS ROG SWIFT PG348Q
Mud Posted July 31, 2011 Author Posted July 31, 2011 I've done some more testing and even when flying low, he often just goes type 3 - no mark. When he does say type 2 - marked by WP, he eventually doesn't mark. I feel like it has something to do with the orientation of the AFAC at a given time. I think I'll just use triggers instead to mark the area with WP and drop the JTAC talk-on process, as the mission specifically requires an OA-10. I guess I could also have an OA-10 circle the area and have the player contact a ground unit without knowing :) Spoiler W10-x64 | B650E Gigabyte Aorus Master | AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D | Noctua NH-D15 G.Skill Trident ZS Neo DDR5-6000 64Gb | MSI RTX 3080ti Gaming X Asus Xonar AE | VPforce Rhino + TM Hotas Warthog MFG Crosswind pedals | Valve Index
Grimes Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 The "type" is defined by the presence of friendly units to the target. Type 1 is friendlies are danger close Type 2 is friendlies are somewhat close Type 3, friendlies are a good distance away from the target No Factor, no friendlies nearby. The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world. Mud Posted August 1, 2011 Author Posted August 1, 2011 In that mission, the only thing even remotely close to the target is the AO-10 doing a race-track pattern over the area. So it seems it's not only for ground units then. Not any more If JTAC can designate target with laser, IR-pointer or smoke then -If unguided weapon used then --Type 1 will in effect -else --Type 2 will be used else -Type 3 will be used Friendlies proximity now has no effect on CAS Type. It was implemented in early builds, but we decide to make logic easer. i7-7700K : 16Gb DDR4 2800 Mhz : Asus Mobo : 2TB HDD : Intel 520 SSD 240gb : RTX 2080ti: Win10 64pro : Dx10 : TrackiR4 : TM Warthog : ASUS ROG SWIFT PG348Q

Type 1: FAC can see BOTH the target and the attacking aircraft (in the terminal phase of the attack) Type 2: FAC can see EITHER the target or the attacking aircraft (usually the target) - Most common type Type 3: FAC can see NEITHER the target or the attacking aircraft (usually FACs operating from HQ units or concealed away from the front lines) Edited August 1, 2011 by Eddie
