As the title says.. I'm looking for a good source for free sound samples to help in mission building.

I am presently using http://www.freesound.org but am not overly impressed with it. Its ok.. but i bet there are better sources out there.

Thanks for any help.

Doesn't help that freesound.org web site is down as i write this.

Im actually adding a whole bunch of custom audio to a few of my missions, including my remake of the shore campaign. I must say I was afraid to attempt audio but last night I learned how to make realistic audio.

It took one free audio editing program and free file converter, one youtube video, a mic, windows sound recorder and about an hour for my first perfect piece. +/- 30 mins for playing around with it. I found its pretty d*mn easy. Thats probably why no is making any templates or usable stuff.

Cause when you take a few minutes to figure it out you can make your own in minutes, today I finished a two minute dialogue in about 5 minutes. Cake. If you wanna know what I did or use pm me. Or hit me up if you need a voice. Good luck dude-

Thanks Wildfire, I have no problem sorting out dialogue, even though the offer of another voice is tempting, might take you up on that. :)

I have Adobe Audition 4.0 so i have the software side sorted. But was looking for good background samples, stuff like radio chatter, distant gunfire etc etc. Just to add a little something.

But maybe youtube / liveleek are the places i should be looking. Cheers.

I loaded up a well known 1st person shooter and took some recordings from that by jumping in various vehicles and walking about as infantry. Load up this mission and you'll hear em

Oh you meant sound FX. doh. Yeah what druid said. You ought to PM Ranger and ask how he built that last mission, I played that online and it had some pretty good stuff. I think arma with the ACE sound mod is pretty realistic, that would be a good way to go using druids method.

Indeed, the two are both good for extracting sounds.

I've found an efficient, free and simple way to do it by recording via FRAPS and extracting the sound with VirtualDub.

Open the youtube FRAPS recording in VDub. The ability to Save As... .wav is available from the File menu. VDub allows you to edit the portion of the video file to get the sound to your liking before saving, and most importantly, delivers a small, editable file for inserting into your mission sounds folder. Select, crop, save, Done.

Made a mission using the A-10 sounds from one of my favorites. Volume in game sounds excellent.
