Snoopy Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Awesome...only thing is we don't ever use a -60 for external air (in fact in 17 years I've never applied external air to an A-10) only electrical power... v303d Fighter Group Discord | Virtual 303d Fighter Group Website

Snoopy Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Dying concept eh. Does it cost less overall to just run and maintain the APU? have no idea the cost just much easier...why push a -60 to the jet when you can just jump in the pit and fire the APU up.... v303d Fighter Group Discord | Virtual 303d Fighter Group Website
Cali Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 I think it's cheaper and faster to do what Paul said. That's one thing you can't do in a 16, hop in it and start it up to do maintenance ops checks. Speed Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 I forgot that money is no object to the USAF. :D Yup, to put things into perspective, the USAF would probably be very happy if every million dollars could be converted into a dead terrorist. You think they're gonna care about a couple bucks of gas? Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility. STP Dragon Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 in fact in 17 years I've never applied external air to an A-10 only electrical power... Hi paulrkiii, In Spangdahlem Airbase (open house) I asked the pilots where to plug in the ground power. They didn't know because they never used it. They always uses the APU to power the systems. And by the way: I asked if they use the ENG OPER switch to MOTOR to turn the engine before they fire it up. They sad NO, only the "old guys" from Nevada are doing this because of the hot surrounding air. In Spangdahlem the air is cold enough to start the engines directly by pulling the throttle from OFF to IDLE. What's your experience? :pilotfly: A pilot would have no nead to know where to hook up the power cart, they are never around the jet when maintenance is being performed. We use AGE for ground power when needed, for example defueling the jet, when performing flight control ops checks, swinging the gear (these checks we use a hydraulic test stand as well). As to motoring the engines before engine start, it depends really. Some of our pilots do it every time they fly, others I've never seen to it. Motoring the engine doesn't really have anything to do with the air temperature but the internal temp of the engines and to ensure that any residual fuel has been purged prior to ignition. 1 v303d Fighter Group Discord | Virtual 303d Fighter Group Website

Eddie Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Dying concept eh. Does it cost less overall to just run and maintain the APU? AVTUR is likely cheaper than Diesel for the GSE anyway. ;)
