herig2 Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 I'm looking to buy a e reader, but with so many to chose from, which one? Does any one have a suggestion. The main used would be to download pdf files, to read and/or study while in bed ( wife is yelling that I spend too much time in front of the computer ). Really would like to put the A10-C manual on it for reference while flying. Thanks for any ideas. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
cichlidfan Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Pretty much any of them will read a PDF well enough, except for the small kindles, though I still don't like the android version of Acrobat reader or the builtin readers that I have seen. I have not used an Ipad but it will do the job just fine I am sure. Of course, the bigger the display the easier on the eyes without zooming in. If you have to zoom in on every page is gets annoying rather quick. It really comes down to what you want to spend as long as PDF reading is all you want to do with it. cichlidfan Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Heres what i use http://foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/ That does look nice but that's for a desktop though, or a Tablet PC anyway. On my desktop I have Acrobat X. It is the other tablet software that is jus too stripped down for my taste! ZQuickSilverZ Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 I made this post using a Nook Color. I love it. It is easy to use, is touch, has a great screen, and has REAL internet. I can read PDF's as well. I can even get Netflix. I need, I need, I need... What about my wants? QuickSilver original. "Off with his job" Mr Burns on the Simpsons. "I've seen steering wheels / arcade sticks / flight sticks for over a hundred dollars; why be surprised at a 150 dollar item that includes the complexities of this controller?! It has BLINKY LIGHTS!!" author unknown. These titles are listed in the chronological order I purchased them. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Eddie Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 May well be out of your budget, but I couldn't recommend the iPad highly enough. It's an essential part of my flight gear. I have all the airfield charts, frequency tables, mission data cards, briefings, sqn SOPs, coordinate converters, units converters, fuel tables and checklists I could ever need on mine. While you can do the same on most e-readers, the fact the iPad has a colour screen which is essential for briefings (recon images etc) and can do everything else besides is the selling point for me. There are quite a few useful aviations apps out there as well (cross wind calculators for example). And the fact that I can check the forums/browse the web while on long transits or while in the orbit waiting for taskings in MP flights is a bonus. :D
ZQuickSilverZ Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Yeah my Nook is color also. Maybee you should consider the Kindle Fire it is also color and touch. It is cheaper to boot ($200). It also has REAL internet (or so I have heard). The pluses for an Ipad are you do not need Wi-Fi and it has a broader app base. The negatives are it is less portable and weighs more. Plus it will give your PC Apple coodies. I need, I need, I need... What about my wants? QuickSilver original. "Off with his job" Mr Burns on the Simpsons. Yes it is color, has Wi-Fi (if your playing A-10 or home reading in bed that is all the internet you need) and I have read the forums and mail on it too. You really can't beat the price either. Jona33 Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 Standard kindle works well. Copy+Paste the PDF's and then read. Pictures are obviously black and white. Neat bit of kit though. I love it. Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing
Yskonyn Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I just got myself the Sony PRS-T1 e-reader. While it does support PDF files, processing them is somewhat slow, but I am being told that this is the nature of the display being used (e-ink), rather than the device. As long as the PDF files are formatted to A5 size they will display well enough. Luckily the DCS manuals are A5 size formatted, but A4 or Letter sized documents will be too small to read and you will need to either zoom or read in landscape mode and scroll. This works a little slow, because the device has to recalculate all the time. Even in A5 the letters are quite small though and up-sizing them destroys the formatting on the pages. Another solution is to turn them 90 degrees and view them in landscape mode, but this will force you to scroll over the pages, but it works well enough. Its certainly do-able, but I think a tablet might be more comfortable reading the PDF files. I do find reading documents on e-ink displays less tiring on the eyes, though. ZQuickSilverZ Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Wonder how long it will take for them to come out with Color E-Ink (I read there working on it). I wonder if you can even back light something like that. Have you guys ever heard of electrowetting. Supposedly this technology would be so cheap you could make disposable E-Readers. Apparently you can even put this on actual PAPER. Now that is impressive. It even supports color and is fast enough to do video. Are we close to a cheap, flexible, low power, disposable screen? http://gizmodo.com/5803426/what-is-an-electrowetting-display http://www.pcworld.com/article/194868/color_eink_electrowetting_brings_color_and_video_to_ebook_reader_screens.html http://www.geek.com/articles/gadgets/electrowetting-discovery-paves-way-for-disposable-paper-e-readers-20101124/ http://spie.org/x44337.xml?ArticleID=x44337 I need, I need, I need... Fleshpiston Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 If you are just going to read books then you cannot beat e-ink (kindle use it and others might but you will need to check). If you want to surf and don't mind your eyes straining then anything else (backlight) will do. E-ink > than any LCD/TFT for reading books from.
