From DSMS:

1 - Select Inventory (OSB5)

2 - Select relevant Weapons Station

3 - Select CBU (OSB7)

4 - Select relevant CBU, ex 97 is OSB18, 105 - OSB8, 103 - OSB6 and 87 - OSB20.

5 - Set HOF with OSB18 (Presses cycle between values)

6 - Once desired value reached, press LOAD (OSB9). For symmetrical loads, press LOAD SYM (OSB10).

7 - Return to DSMS (OSB14).

A slightly quicker version of the above, there is actually no need to reload the station to change weapon configurations.

1 - Select Inventory (OSB5)

2 - Select relevant Weapons Station

3 - Select INV STAT (OSB3)

4 - Set HOF with OSB18 (Presses cycle between values)

5 - Set RPM with OSB17 (Only for CBU-87/103)

6 - Once desired value reached, press LOAD (OSB9). For symmetrical loads, press LOAD SYM (OSB10).

7 - Return to DSMS (OSB14).

Can anyone please recommend some good general purpose settings for HOF and RPM.

A good starting point anyway?

Both clusters do OK at 1800 HOF, unless wind-drift is an issue for the 97/105. As for RPM, only relevant to 87/103's and setting will depend on target area, ie wider dispersal = larger RPM value.

When attacking low. I tend to use a low HoF and the highest RPM. It makes for a good show. My example would be to start a run at 100agl and right before you get to the targets, pull up above HoF and release the egress out low. Good when your avoiding long range Sam threats.

Hi, OK read the thread, looks like most people are settliing onto HOF1800 although clearly not that important +/- few hundred feet. But what about RPM? I have seen references to faster and slower RPMs but no actual numbers. Whats a good ballpark? 1, 10, 100, 1000, I literally have no idea.

Toss bombing? I would like to see, fly in fast and low, pull up just enough that the trajectory takes the bomb up to HOF where it bursts. By then of course A10 is hauling out of there with its belly in the bushes. Realistic? Sounds like a big ask of the CCRP computer.

Use the diamond example I linked you to. In that example, targets in a diamond formation, all 200 feet from the centrepoint, required a 1000RPM setting for adequate dispersal ensuring the highest possible kill-rate, in that instance 4 for 4.

Work out the area and adjust accordingly for larger/lesser dispersal requirements, which you can judge quite accurately by using the TGP yardstick prior to engaging.

You can't toss a cbu under its HoF. It will simply disperse upon release. It takes a little planning to use the 87 down low.

Yeah I thought it might be a bit far fetched! Thanks for clarifying though!

It will not release - you'll get an Invalid Fuzing Error.

I guess I was flying at HoF. I've had the fuzing error. I've also had releases where it went and prematurely let go of its load. Kinda awkward.

From USAF documentation:

CBU-87/89 NOTES:

1. CBU-87 deliveries were computed using the following settings:

• RPM: 2000 (S)

• HOF: 1200 (E)

• Timer: 2.23 (S)

2. CBU-87 ripple single deliveries ensure 60’ minimum overlap and 5-7 bomblets/1000 sq. ft,

which is optimized for soft-skinned vehicle targets. For armored targets, employ in pairs or

ripple pairs to achieve 8-12 bomblets/1000 sq. ft.

3. CBU-87 pattern sizes (Length x Width in feet) (Assumes 4 cans delivered)

• VLD: 428 x 292 (Rip Sgl) 351 x 292 (Rip Prs)
