So Steam is having its holiday giveaway right now ... if you complete special achievements in certain games, you earn gifts like discount codes or free games, or "coal", which can be combined to make gifts, traded with other players, or used as entries in a raffle.

Aaaanyway, wouldn't it be awesome if one of the achievements was a DCS: Warthog achievement? A tour de force of the A-10, like "destroy all the AAA emplacements in the River Run mission with realistic avionics" or something.

You'd have all these Quakers and StarCrafters, who'd been doing achievements in games like Deus Ex and Team Fortress, all of a sudden required to take to the skies in the most advanced flight simulator on the market today.

And, to make it extra enticing, maybe completing this one gets you triple the reward or something.

I think it would be awesome. You'd get a bunch of people who would be like "eff this ish" and throw out their joystick, but a few who persevere, learn the jet, get better and better, and eventually discover that the real reward of DCS: Warthog is not Steam achievements :)

people who play games for achievements lack the attention span to appreciate dcs. i doubt much "learning" will take place.

That is a rather narrow minded view of achievements. They've evolved quite abit, and it really depends on the types of things a game developer wants to center their achievements around. In the context of DCS, achievements could be used to hint at capabilities of the aircraft that they might not be familiar with. For instance, something teamwork oriented like, "Have a friend buddy lase a GBU-12 for you." Or stats that aren't really relevant, but are still kinda neat to know, like, "Take off from every base in the game."

Really the only problem with achievements is when the player base place a higher importance on achievements than the game itself, wherein they decide to do the achievements simply for 100% completion and ignore the intention of said achievements.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

Indiana Jones has the trifecta. :D

Ahhh, can't find that video where they were requesting airsupport but were denied because they didn't have a certain kill streak... I'm pretty sure it was collegehumor, but I just cant find it.

I like that idea - combining Achievements with Learning aspects of the aircraft. Isn't somebody working on a Training Campaign already?
