Yes, I know you've heard it before but is just me or has this chopper entered a bump mode?! According to the forum some have it, other don't so I'm dropping a track, LAlt+Enter included.

Anyway, sorry if it's bit slow but I'm really trying to understand the cause of this bump thing!

BS1? BS2? Trimmer method?

If BS2, try on a simple mission devoid of any units and post the track - In your current track you never leave the runway so cannot comment on said track.

Re trimming problems, just remember that you cannot necessarily hit the trim button once to get from attitude A to attitude B. Depending on the extent of the attitude change you should be hitting the trim button multiple times, ie a ten degree climb necessitates approx 10 trim inputs, this again dependant on the trimmer method you utilize.

First thanks for your time and answer, and sorry if I was a bit hasty. I guess you also somewhat figured out I use BS 1.0.2 and no, I'm not leaving the runway as the goal being to trim to a hover. I guess that could have been made more clear too.

As for any units in the track I until previously couldn't get any external view (F2) without at least one friendly unit in a player mission. Don't know why this was, perhaps an accidentally pressed button or a temporary bug somewhere (hoping not start a different topic). In any case, the mission is simply and old legacy. I otherwise like having external views, at least for the replays, while I'm currently learning.

Now, for your convenience I've removed that single unit and also done a shorter, flight off the runway.

Regarding trim-method it's a "no CPTM" (that's unticked, empty box), which to my experience, having tried both ways, so far haven't impressed me with a difference. And as for frequent trimming; if I do that trying to hover the chopper basically goes head over heals. So if it doesn't "necessarily trim from attitude A to attitude B" as you say; how does it trim? No matter the attitude extent, I seem to bump all the same!

And lastly; no TrackIR/FreeTrack or pedals. A TMHotas Flight X with NO (!) tweaks on the Axis Tunes or Slider, all default. WinXP, i5, 4GB RAm, some NVidia 1MB Card, "GTX" something.

This said, it might very well be that I've misunderstood the way trim is supposed to be used but can't say the manual or training vids have been that fulfilling on the topic either (BS1 at least). The forum better there.

I'm not 100% sure but I think what's happening is that when you press the trim button, you don't recenter your stick quickly enough. The default delay is 0.5 seconds IIRC. If you take longer than that to recenter the cyclic aka joystick, you'll have the newly trimmed settings and then on top of that comes the current joystick deviation from center. That would explain the bumps that could be seen in your second track.

I took control and easily had the same problem.

There should be several ways to work around this. While Viper is a fan of repeated, small trims, I favor the press and hold method: before you start your maneuver, press the trim button and keep it pressed all the way through the maneuver until the chopper is stabilized at the new attitude. Then release trim and quickly recenter joystick and pedals (which I highly recommend you should get as soon as possible - pedals make a huge difference!).

Another solution would be to set CPTM on. With CPTM, as soon trim is pressed, all joystick and rudder input will be completely ignored until both stick and rudder are centered. I flew around a bit with this setting and couldn't get any bump no matter how hard I tried. The big disadvantage is that unless the controls are centered, there's just no way to regain control. I just almost crashed because of this; I thought I'd centered the stick but apparently missed the center position by a bit. The center-zone can be configured, though.

And another option would be to fly without CPTM and adjust the time delay to recenter controls. A very quick search came up with this post, but there will most likely be more detailed info on that topic if you're interested.

tl;dr

Try any of the following and see if it helps:

  • small, repeated trims
  • press and hold trimming
  • Central Position Trimmer Mode on
  • Adjust re-center delay when CPTM is off
