JaseGill Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 All, Well after much questions here and on an AV Forum or two I took the plunge. On Friday evening I bought a Samsung UE37D5000 37" LCD TV and its great. I was worried it would give me problems having tried an older HD Ready Plasma. Didnt have any. One good hint came from an AV Forum. People had experienced problems with scaling on screen when using the HDMI input. In Samsungs there is an ability to rename a channel, so renaming it to PC fixes it. You wouldnt expect that to work but it worked perfectly for me. Have done some RoF, SWTOR and A10c already and I can say its such a difference. Anyone planning or worried about doing the same I'd say go for it as long as you can ensure its a full HD 1080 TV and in my case I paid a bit extra to get a 100Hz model as I figured 50Hz was below the ability of my rig at this resolution. Gunnergolly Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 (edited) I was thinking of replacing my 23" monitor with an LED TV. If i go for a 37" TV i'd be sitting about 0.6m away from it using my current computer desk. I was wondering wouldn't this be a bit too close for comfortable viewing ???... I recently had to RMA my HD7950 card as it failed after only a weeks use, so i've reverted back to using my old HD5870 graphics card. Would the HD5870 be sufficient to drive a single 37" or 40" TV ?, i currently have a dual monitor setup with a 22" monitor sat on top of a 23" monitor using halios. If i were to buy a TV then i would probably just use the TV on it's own initially without my Halios touchscreen monitor....however i would miss Halios !!!. I was thinking along the lines that if my HD5870 was up to the job, they'd be little point in buying a replacement HD7950. When my RMA refund money comes through i was thinking of spending the money on a TV instead. Regards Gunner... cichlidfan Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Pixels are pixels. 22" or 37" and 1080 is still 1080. The physical size has nothing to do with whether a video card can handle it. EDIT: At a half meter away I would find it too large for some things. Depends on the game really. 1 ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! JaseGill Posted March 8, 2012 Author Posted March 8, 2012 I sit much further way now, yet it still feels much bigger and a a result much better immersion. Maybe this is due to the fact that it much more life size than a 22". As the previous poster says 1080 is 1080. I was scared bigger pixel = worse picture. How wrong I was :-) J. Gunnergolly Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Jasegill How did you rename the channel to PC on your Samsung TV ?. I have the same model TV as you. I'm having problems with scaling and can't seem to find where you can rename the channel. Maybe i'm doing something wrong as i've only just bought the TV, however going from a 22" monitor to a 37" TV to my eyes the picture looks alot more blurry. I guess this is due to the fact that i'm now stretching the 1920x1080 resolution over a much larger area. Are there any other settings that i can adjust on this TV to get a better picture ?... JaseGill Posted March 24, 2012 Author Posted March 24, 2012 Gunner, Sorry for the late reply,. lifes been a bit hectic. To rename the channel I did this: 1. Hit the remote Source Button, 2. Hit the remote Tools Button, 3. Select the input youre plugged into (I use HDMA1/DVI) using arrow keys, 4. Hit the Enter button on remote in the centre of the Arrow Keys, 5. Select Edit Name, hit Enter on the Remote again and select PC, 6. Job Done. Have a cuppa/beer/stiff drink. Hope this helps, J. 1 Rig: Home Built, water cooled,i5 2500K @ 4.3Ghz, ASUS P8P67Pro Mobo, 8GB Patriot Viper 2 Sector 5 RAM, MSI Nvidia GTX970 4GB Gaming OC, 120GB OCZ Vertex 2e SSD Boot, 120GB OCZ Vertex 2e SSD Games (BS & WH), Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB other, Samsung UE37D5000 37" LED TV,EloTouch 1600x1200 secondary, Thrustmaster Warthog No.467, Thrustmaster MFD, Saitek Pro Pedals, Track IR4 with Track Clip Pro. Depth Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 Hmm, I don't have that tv so I'll just skip to step 6. Thanks :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
hassata Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 :D Should be Menu>Picture>Picture Options for scaling. I think 16:9 should do it (or try Screen Fit) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Ramstein Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I love my 37 incher I was amazed anyone said not to use one. i have used a 46" lcd hdtv with hdmi cable since 2008,, actually since 2009, 2008, it sat dark while I lay in a hospital bed.. far away.. int he inter, it works great, but int he summer, I have to have an air conditioner nearby, because of the heat fromt he pc and tv in the small room, and I get fevers fromillness, so the tv cooks me fromt he front while the a/c blows cool air on my back.. basically, the 46" lcd tv puts out a lot of heat... you wouldn't know that if you just have it in a big room and sit far back... also, you would think you woul see smal objects easier and rom further away, ubt it isn't the case, but it's still a big picture... and very enjoyable.. I don't have a smaller monitor, the last one I had (crt) burned out a couple years ago,, ad I won this lcd tv in a contest, just in time when I became bedridden and was unable to walk... or even fly or use a joystick,,, but when my health improved it's been really nice to have a large screen... but now I really need a better computer,, as mine is getting too old and is having hard time keeping up with the cpu and gpu power and specs for the newer flight sims.. enjoying the fact that the hdmi is just plug and play, no need to worry about setting size settings and such... :joystick: ASUS Strix Z790-H, i9-13900, WartHog HOTAS and MFG Crosswind G.Skill 64 GB Ram, 2TB SSD EVGA Nvidia RTX 2080-TI (trying to hang on for a bit longer) 55" Sony OLED TV, Oculus VR
