Sorry if this was asked already but I have been thinking how cool it would be if there was a 2D "pit trainer" that could run outside of the sim. basically, it would need functioning MFD's, UFC, & CDU, to practice TAD and CDU functions. Possibly it could be used to create and review flight plans.

Not sure if it would be easy (and wouldnt expect ED to put any amount of work to create it as you guys have done so much already) but it would be nice to practice these functions outside of waiting for the sim to load and cranking up the plane.

any thoughts?

Why not just play with it while sitting in your plane on the ground?

right.. and I do. Just was thinking of the possibility of something that could be launched from the desktop and run in 2D that could be up in a matter of seconds for quick access to practice.

Agian, the idea isnt worth spending any real time on... was just asking if it could be ported somehow.... maybe using something like helios to show the data while running an executable that uses the TAD & NAV logic in the sim.

Good pit trainer = Flt manual. :) Actually, what would be helpful for me is a Hotas functions trainer. For example, flash in a window a certain function like "Create SPI", have 5 seconds to press the right sequence or you fail. Maybe have the time value adjustable.

I think you misunderstand what the OP means by pit trainer.:)

...the only other way to more familiarization with the MFD's, UFC, & CDU etc. is active pause i think...

That would be the point of having a lower overhead version of the cockpit simulation. Not having to run the full sim is the idea.

I should have thought this over more and I apologize. The link above would be a "pit trainer" ... Its very good... looks like the DCS training missions.

I guess what I was thinking of was a "CDU trianer" to learn the NAV, waypoint, mission planning, wind correction and other facets of that mysterious and cursed little 1970's-version-of-an-I-Pad thingy that has a keypad... also know as the CDU.

It would allow us to RTFM and then apply it with a fast launching app that would let us enter and apply data in the flight computer then practice using that data in the TAD.

The reason I thought of this is I study and learn an aspect of the CDU (like entering waypoints and flight plan building) then when I need to adapt to something new Im totally lost.

Be nice to RTFM or read a post and then quickly apply that newly learned skill instead of waiting for 10 minutes for my PC to launch the sim and start the plane.

Again, not worth putting a lot of time into this but was curious if it could be done using some part of the game engine (sans the 3D rendering part) and then displaying it with an app like Helios or hog-touch.

It can't be done, not in the way you're thinking. You would still have to wait the 10 minutes so to speak.

Just make a mission where you start on the ground with the aircraft already started, and the DCS: A-10C ends up being the pit trainer ... heck, the USANG uses the DTS A-10C as a pit trainer :D

OK thanks tharos. i thought the whole .exe would still need to be initialized.

A restart button would be good when ingame.
