FatSlapper Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Could someone knowledgeable about the surround sound system please comment on it? My first thoughts are: There isn't much 3d sound in a helmet, in a cockpit sitting in front of two jet engines flying at 250 knots, maybe a little at the airport. But, The one thing I would like to know is: Can You assign the in-helmet sounds and radio chatter on the center channel for headphone use and all other sounds on LF, RF, LR, RR, and Sub speakers? What exactly does the surround-sound provide in terms of realism, immersion, purpose in a military combat aircraft?

No, i don't think this is possible right now. However, the audio engine should always pan the radio chatter to center, no matter where your virtual head points at. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. FatSlapper Posted March 23, 2012 Author Posted March 23, 2012 (edited) So what is the point then? As I understand there is NO vertical steering with surround sound (5.1).So what is it for? and why is it there? Head down in the pit with wingman close by you can tell which side or front or back He is at, but not over or under? And an exploding near miss of a sam tells You what exactly? Could someone please tell Me what this is useful for, how does it help with SA in the air? Just curious as to how this applys to a flight sim. Indispensable for a FPS but why a flightsim??? Will the positions of the sounds stay relative with trackIR use? Edited March 23, 2012 by FatSlapper

Nobody said 5.1 was perfect, but it is a step up from stereo or mono. Also, keep in mind that the sim is more than just the in-cockpit-view. Btw. what's your point? That the devs should invest work to take it back out again? :) Nobody is forcing you to use it. And an exploding near miss of a sam tells You what exactly? Impulse type sounds can't be localised that well either way (talking real life here). Will the positions of the sounds stay relative with trackIR use? To your ears? I don't think so. For that, TrackIR would have to additionally tell the sim where your real head is pointing at (instead of just your virtual head with amplified motion) so it can correct and i don't think the TIR interface is laid out for that. Edit: Well, theoretically you could try to read the TIR config data(if they are in a reasonably accessible format) and correct for the amplification TIR provides. So yes, technically it might be possible, but i don't think the sim is doing it. Edited March 23, 2012 by sobek Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!

Unless you regard the noise of shaking furniture as a plus, a decent headset can deliver enough low end. The emphasis being on decent. ;) Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Otherwise, I don't suppose I could come round to your house, could I?:smilewink: The world is going mad. Me?
