alex1 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 I was about to buy a 2gb 560ti when i noticed the new radeon 7850... I run a 2500k and only use one screen at 1900 1200, what are you opinions on this new card ? is nvidia better than Radeon??? Thanks
sobek Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Define "better". :) There is a generation leap (that includes a die shrink) in between those products. The performance ratings i had a glance at seem to indicate that it performs about on level with a 560ti 1gb and a bit worse than the 560ti 448 cores. Since it does feature a smaller manufacturing process, it does consume significantly less power in doing so. You'd have to compare prices and weigh in what power consumption is worth to you. The reviews tend to favour the 7870 over the 7850 regarding bang/buck, though. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
alex1 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 ok thanks for the info .. would you choose nvidia over amd for dcs a10c or does it not really matter??
sobek Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 To that i would say: Depends. If you want more than 2 displays, amd is a must (nVidia is catching up with the 6xx series). Right now, i would probably go for the amd card, since in the price range they are the least power hungry (which is a big point for me), albeit a bit weaker (i tend to not play at ultra high resolutions, my monitor only goes to 1680*1050). If the 680 is anything to go by, the new cards by nvidia seem to be really ahead of amd in all categries (power savings, GPU power and price), but the mid range cards might take as long as august to release. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
alex1 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 yeah i was leaning towards amd thanks for the help mate :)
Cedaway Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I use an AMD HD5870. After having some problem with in DCS A-10c, I've looked over the forum and I've noticed there are some recurrent problems with AMD cards (Drivers in cause). Just do a quick search in the forum... I personnaly advise Nvidia because AMD cards seems to have drivers issues with DCS. DCS Wish: Turbulences affecting surrounding aircraft... alex1 Posted April 10, 2012 Author Posted April 10, 2012 oh good advice mate... i am looking at the 560ti 2gb version and the 560ti 448 core but the latter has only 1280gb of vram which would you choose for 1 screen at 1900 1200??
Togg Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 (edited) AMD cards have drivers issues with lot of games. The hardware is good but the software.... Did you remember the famous hotfix or drivers which turned RAGE into blue ? Seriously...ok, it was an interesting way to fix the blurry texture problem... Togg Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 but the mid range cards might take as long as august to release. TSMC can't provide enough 28 nm chips...august seems optimistic and prices will stay high for a while. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] https://github.com/Togg-streamdeck/dcs

sobek Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 (edited) I ordered the 7870 today, will be back with reports once it has arrived. Arrived today, Sapphire 7870 to be exact. With everything maxed out, Water at high, trees at 10000m, shrubbery at 200, all shadow and lighting options enabled, i'm getting between 40 and 60 frames on the ramp. The sapphire cooler is *very* quiet and the card seems to stay below 60° in DCS. I wouldn't have imagined that i was that held back by the gc card, but the new lighting and shadow features really tax mainly the gpu. Edited April 18, 2012 by sobek Good, fast, cheap.
