Hello

I'm hoping the answer as to why my GPU is being driven hard to 100% is because DCSW is still WIP Beta...

I have a EVGA GTX 580 and i've been playing the BS2 1.111 "Clear Tkvarcheli" mission which is pretty demanding mission for any computer (mine is a i5 2500k@4.8, 8GB RAM).

The above mission with all settings on high and my FPS capped at 36 and never drops below that (GPU temp stable at 76DegC and average GPU use around 72%.

In comparison when i make a simple test flight of the SU-25T in the DCSW mission editor and then go and fly it my GPU is regularly touching 100% with temps at 87DegC

The sim still feels very smooth at that but just a bit worrying when my fan is constantly going all out to try and keep the temperatures in check.

Has anybody else noticed that their GPU is getting worked harder when playing DCSW ?...

As its a beta, I would say thats why.

Put in a support ticket :)

Doubt that'll do anything. Probably just beta. Turn down some settings for now.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Lots of models getting updated it appears with this release. There are more polygons and more detail to render so yes your GPU usage will go up. You can always try downloading that new nvidia driver and cap the framerate on DCS with that. It has dynamic Vsync that reportedly reduces power consumption.

Also if you are just doing free flight you will prob be running at higher FPS. Try doing a mission with stuff going on.

Basically your CPU is being taxed in the first, busy, mission and can't provide info to the GPU quick enough for high frame rates. In the less busy mission the CPU can supply the GPU with all the info it needs for sky high frame rates, The GPU if supplied with enough data will hit 100% easily. Try enabling Vsync that should cap your frame rates.

I don't really understand why my GPU was maxing out at 100% all the time when i had already capped my FPS in the config file at 36. When playing DCSW i was indicating 36 FPS in the top left of my screen so the FPS capping was supposedly working.

However i tried turning on Vsync as suggested but then my FPS went up to 60FPS and GPU was still running at 100% with temps reaching 90 DegC.

I've now downloaded the Nvidia 301.24 Beta drivers and EVGA Precision X (this utility is required for the actual FPS limiting).

I have set my FPS at 34 using the EVGA Precision X utility and i'm now running at 72% GPU loading @ 74 DegC.........a bit more comfortable !!...

I hope in the future Nvidia will incorporate the FPS limiter within the driver itself so you don't have to use a third party utility.

Thankyou for your replies and suggestions.

On my end I have found that AA level makes quite a bit of difference, in ATI CCC on Application Preferrence and in sim 4x is much easier then for example 8xQ settings... generally it doesn't make much difference since I cap my FPS also (to 38 ) but it really does show massive difference when flying very low over flat area that has lots of forrests (I assuem there are lot of trees textures that have to be AA'd :) ). So I leave AA on 4x setting in sim (notice in my sig I have HD7970 which is a pretty good video card and lot of AA still makes a difference)
