huge Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Quick question....... Why can't the aim9 pic up the ir signature/contrast from a "hot" ground vehicle? Could it in real life?

STP Dragon Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 In my point of view it is not "hot" enough. What's the exhaust temperature of a tank or truck? 50-100°C? What's the exhaust temperature of a engine turbine of a aircraft? 500-1000°C? Also the surrounding temperature can matter. In 10.000 - 20.000 feet the temperature is much lower than on the ground. GGTharos Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 It could, but it has never been used that way and there is no reason to do so. There is too much chance of the missile finding something else to hit, the warhead is relatively small, and there's probably a good chance that the fuze would detonate the missile from ground returns before reaching its target. It was simply not adapted for attacking ground targets. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
huge Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 So although not in its design specs, should we get a seeker tone off of ground vehicles and fires? Even if it would be pointless or dangerous to use. Thanks for the info though.
Hamblue Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I would think that in real life the couple times it would be feasible are against ground targets when in cold climate andnaval targets. In both cases the area around the targets would be different enough to track. Against naval targets the damage would be minor though due to the type and size of warhead. Maybe just take out personnel. Asus Sabertooth P67 Motherboard 2600k CPU, 16 gig DDR3, 1600. Samsung 830, 256 gig hard drive, GTX780 Video Card, Warthog Hotas, Razer Mamba mouse. GGTharos Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Against naval targets the missile would lock onto a reflection of the sun from the water if it got in the way. And sure, it would give you a tone vs. a fire ... these things are pretty sensitive. But again, mostly useless for A2G. Forget this idea. huge Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 Was more a question about why there's no tone from vehicles and ground object fires and whether it was part of the aim9's design or if the seeker head isnt completely modeled in game. Forgotten Interesting i can receive a tone of a maverick but nothing once its hit its target.
GGTharos Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Because it isn't simulated in the game :) Ground vehicles etc have no heat signature. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Harzach Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 It wouldn't be terribly effective against ground targets anyway, would it? It isn't a kinetic weapon and would be totally useless against armor - potentially effective against soft targets/infantry, but targeting remains an issue.
GGTharos Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Who knows. The Russians did have some procedure to use the R-60 in A2G, but actual A2G weapons are much more preferred. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

AdawgPHL Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I've succesfully used an AIM-9 on a moving ground target (T-72). I've actually done it twice. The second being the T-72. Don't remember what I hit with the first one. F99th Wizard #56
Tracer2k Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 im not completely sure how aim-9 works, but doesen't it have a proximity fuse? so that the missile actually dont hit the target, but it explodes close to the target and causes shrapnel damage? if so, it would be very inefective against anything armored. Yep, proximity fuse as with just about every A/A missile past, present and future. And even if they had an impact fuse they'd still be useless against armoured targets. Expanding rod, and other fragmentation warheads used in A/A missiles are not very good against anything but unarmoured, soft targets
