MemphisBelle Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 (edited) Hey guys. I have sometimes heard that most of the customers of ED products prefer singleplayer. Well, honestley I have some problems to belive that. On the other hand, the few servers available in the serverlobby are actually representing that fact. So I´d nontheless like to start a poll (hope a poll like this dont exist already, haven´t yet found any while searching). It would be great if you could also leave a small statement why you prefer the one or the other choice. This question has no certain reason, it is simply because I am curious whether the rumors are true. I also would like to please you to really make your choice. Leaving this thread without using the poll wouldn´t be helpful to me. Thanks in advance about that. Edited July 12, 2012 by MemphisBelle BlackSharkDen | BSD Discord | DCS Tutorial Collection
MemphisBelle Posted July 12, 2012 Author Posted July 12, 2012 (edited) so this is my personal first statement why I prefer Multiplayer. I started with Lock on back in 2004. I tried the one or other SP Mission but had most fun while Playing Mukltiplayer. For DCS series it is the same. I have my problems with the singleplayer campaings/Mission. Not to beat them...OK...a little, but I am missing the feeling of really beeing part of a group. Edited July 12, 2012 by MemphisBelle BlackSharkDen | BSD Discord | DCS Tutorial Collection
GGTharos Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 What sort of results do you think you will get on an online forum asking about MP/SP preference? :) The claim that there are a lot more SP players than MP players are not guesswork. While ED has ways of telling (After all, they know how many units they sold, and how many people register with the Master Server. They can collect other statistics also, if they want), also consider this: Suppose A-10C cost a million dollars to produce. How many people do you see playing online? Let's make an optimistic estimate ... 500? So let's say optimistically the average sale price is $60 ... that's $30000. Do you think ED would still be in business? Hey guys. MemphisBelle Posted July 12, 2012 Author Posted July 12, 2012 so to make ist short...MP might sink in meaninglessness one day...hope that wont happen. But I nontheless want to know what people do like on SP Gaming. Considering the few servers and the huge amount of copies they were sold, there must be a lot of people sitting alone in their chamber, flying and cursing (or even not)...is that really all they want? GGTharos Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 so to make ist short...MP might sink in meaninglessness one day...hope that wont happen. It won't. As you see ED is increasing MP possibilities, not the other way around. Considering the few servers and the huge amount of copies they were sold, there must be a lot of people sitting alone in their chamber, flying and cursing (or even not)...is that really all they want? Or maybe it's what they have time for, or maybe their internet connection isn't good enough, or maybe this or that or the other. MemphisBelle Posted July 12, 2012 Author Posted July 12, 2012 (edited) Or maybe it's what they have time for, or maybe their internet connection isn't good enough, or maybe this or that or the other. I´ve got a 1,5 Mbit connection which means 15kb/sec upload and 170 kb/sec in download...The DCS netcode is the best code I´ve ever seen. I can even host a 2 players session with my crappy line...so this cant be the reason...their must be another one. My guess is that the people who prefer singleplayerdo not know what it means to join a mission with a friend (or others) the MP community is unfortunately pretty rare...I also could imagine that many people are hosting their servers via direct IP input or tungle tool, they wont be visible in the serverlist, wouldn´t they? GGTharos Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 What about people with only a modem? What about people who live in some rural place with crappy latency or network jitter? And so on. I can even host a 2 players session with my crappy line...so this cant be the reason...their must be another one. Your guess is right for a small subset of all the people who play offline :) As to whether they are visible on the serverlist or not, ED would still know since they still have to go through the Master Server. Nate--IRL-- Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Given the amount of sales compared to the amount of fliers online, Multiplayer is minuscule in comparision. The VAST majority of DCS fliers fly in Singleplayer. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
MemphisBelle Posted July 12, 2012 Author Posted July 12, 2012 What about people with only a modem? What about people who live in some rural place with crappy latency or network jitter? And so on. It´s me living on a rural place...and I am enjoying DCS MP quite a lot...again, this cant be the reason...even not the Modem. People who own DCS / Lock on are kind of players/Gamers. They also play other games, which means they need to update them. So people who have a modem only might be part of the community, but I bet that these are the very rarest, and those cant result the bad MP popularity BlackSharkDen | BSD Discord | DCS Tutorial Collection
GGTharos Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Sure, people who have a modem may be rare. In the US, and Europe. There are other places where this is not the case. And rural connections often suck - not everyone lives where you do. In any case, the point is that there's plenty of reasons for not playing online, not the least of which is 'don't wanna' and it's quite valid. So people who have a modem only might be part of the community, but I bet that these are the very rarest, and those cant result the bad MP popularity [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
MemphisBelle Posted July 12, 2012 Author Posted July 12, 2012 And rural connections often suck hahaha, you cant imagine how much right you are...I have fresh air and whide open area, forests and mountains nearby...no traffic jams each morning on the way to work... but a damn sucking connection :D (but this will change within the next 2 years, so we get 25 Mbit ) ------------------ to the people who participate the poll, please let me know why you prefer your choice., thanks. FLANKERATOR Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 MP means also mastering the simulator to some extent which is not the case of the majority. People do hesitate to jump in despite the several available flight schools (STP, VEAO, 74th to name a few). They may as well not be aware of such community support. They may spend the little free time they've got trying the tutorials and trainings not to mention solo campaigns... I see MP as the ultimate stage and many players simply don't reach it. I've myself started MP in Lock-On after a year of SP. Situational Awareness: https://sa-sim.com/ | The Air Combat Dojo: https://discord.gg/Rz77eFj
Huckle Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 (edited) there must be a lot of people sitting alone in their chamber, flying and cursing (or even not)...is that really all they want? Yep. I've played multiplayer (in other sims), and while it's fun and exciting, 99% of the time I just want to escape pressures of real life and pretend I'm Russian chopper pilot, play as and when I want. I understand your point Huckle, but I do the same thing, except via multiplayer :D. I can see a point that with multiplayer the online mission may not be optimal for us chopper pilots. Or the other side has some jets just chopper hunting. More or less you can end up feeling not so important to the multiplayer mission. Where as, all of the single player missions are exclusively focused on you as the main "actor"
