badger66 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Ok , I was taxing around Mozdok last night in the dark , I made a wrong turn ..... witch was a dead end and no place to turn around . Decided to do a U turn and managed to get stuck in the grass !!! Full power wouldnt budge it ..... is there any way to address this issue ? That surely isnt realistic for an A-10 !!! I remember from racesim games , the people who modded them could adjust the amount of "grab" a grass strip could effect a car . Just a thought as its a real pain , I had to exit to spectator and wind her up again . Guess the real lesson is , dont make a wrong turn then !!!
Echo38 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 (edited) This is normal operation in the sim. I don't know whether or not it's precisely realistic, but bear in mind that the A-10 does weigh ~25,000 pounds. That much weight concentrated on a couple of square feet of surface area (the underside of the tires) is bound to sink a bit into the ground if the ground isn't hard enough. Here's a video of an F-16 going off the end of a runway. This isn't an exact comparison, because the F-16 looks to have been going at least 50 knots when he went off, and also he was surely holding the brakes down when he went onto the grass (which would cause the gear to be more likely to collapse, for multiple reasons--more pressure on the nosewheel, for one). Still, you can see that a heavy jet doesn't enjoy off-runway excursions. A Second World War fighter can handle grass runways (and even beach landings!), but anything heavier than that and you should only land (or even taxi) on concrete. Not saying that you can't taxi a fighter jet on hard-packed dirt I.R.L., but I wouldn't want to try it. And tall grass & soft dirt are a definite no. Edited August 24, 2012 by Echo38
docfu Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 5.4 million dollars for going off the runway... Hell, just for that I loaded up DCS and hit the gear button while on the ground...just for giggles!
xxJohnxx Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I can only speak for myself, but the little time I have made in light, single engine piston powered aircrafts, I always noticed that grass makes a huge diffrence. While our little aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 600 kgs taxis fine in idle, it needs much much much more power while taxing on grass. I know the A-10 produces much more power than the aircraft I fly, however the A-10 is also about 20 times heavier. However, when looking at the weehls of the A-10, they don't look much bigger than the weehls of the most GA aircrafts, and so the A-10 has much more wight on nearly the same area, which won't help in grass. But, until today I never had the experience to taxi a real A-10 trough the field and so I can't say for sure how the Hog really handels. joey45 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 I take it the A-10 wasn't designed for grass then.... ... Tango Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Wet grass is even worse! At my local museum they have aircraft parked on grass - they are now up to the axles. Best regards, Tango.

Unlike the Jag or the Su-25. when you are gently - you can drive her from Krasnodar to Batumi - even cross-country and make a mid-air "hop" from time to time. ;) Check the size and the construction of the hinge of the front wheel of the Frog in comparison to the Warthog : Edited August 24, 2012 by PeterP
joey45 Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Put some low pressure tires on it and it should work...
