Gotta admit, these anti-nuclear activists probably did us all a favor!

Sorry, just making chit-chat about military and aviation stuff- isn't that what this forum is for?

And yes, they did us all a favor by pointing out that security is not tight enough. One of the most effective ways to force an improvement in security is probably an incident like this- highly embarrassing and public. Would you rather it have been half a dozen guys with AK-47s? Having this stuff get stolen would be bad for everyone.

I understood very well - just wanted to show that this forum has not a single homogeneous opinion.

And when someone is posting his own opinion (and generalizing it) he should not be surprised if others post their opinion too.

No - how can you think so?

That this "incident" happened is sure bad enough.

OMG I saw the firm G4S....

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

I'm still not sure where I interjected any controversial opinion into anything. I try to avoid such things. My only opinion was that they "probably did us a favor". If you think that is false, please explain why, because the only things I can think of would be that either you think that it's better if the lax security continued, that you think this actually made security weaker, or that you would rather prefer that bomb-grade, highly enriched uranium was a freely available substance to be stolen?

Just a little confused here

Bwahahaha. They should have seen that coming. G4S (previously Group 4) is a running joke in the UK wrt security. From escaped prisoners to robberies to illegal immigrants working in the Home Office to nuns in nuclear weapons plants. An impressive resume indeed.

Thanks for answering my initial question.

Gotta admit, these "feckless" anti-nuclear activists probably did us all a favor!

Sorry -

And :

No- I don't think that highly enriched uranium should be available for everyone or that the lax security should be continued.

I just think that this thread belongs to the "chit-chat " instead of the "military and aviation" section.

Edit :

I see now that it got moved already. well done.

OK, that's one vote against me starting a fissionable material collection. :P

Good choice Cichlidfan!

But this sadly doesn't change the fact that it is already available to everyone that can pay for it.

Very true. In my mind this incident isn't just about what was stored at that location, though. It is also about the lack of security provided by many contract organizations working for both the government and private industry. It doesn't have to be quite a dangerous as in this situation for lax security to be serious concern.

I also thought a dash of humor was needed.

OK, glad we got that sorted. I didn't believe that you believed those things either, which I why I was confused. No, I make no judgments for or against the nuclear activists, I merely imply that whatever your opinion is on the the matter, you have to admit that they probably did us a favor by revealing how lax security had become.

My own personal feelings on nuclear weapons is a little mixed. Personally, as a fan of space exploration, I still think a cool way to reduce the world stockpile of nuclear bomb materials would be build some Orion starships :)
