neroroxxx Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Hey guys, most voices in the DCS World sound very similar and whenever I watch a video with radio chatter of fighter jets the voices have a whole different feel to them. Because of this I decided to make a mod with brand new voices. I have a small recording studio at home and experience doing some small tv commercials for bands and promo videos, I do a lot of voice overs and I have plenty of voice actors, I also have a couple of friends that do dispatching for local fire departments and have great voices over the radio. My goal is to make these voices sort of like the "Fighting Cocks" video voices ( ). Now I have the scripts ready and 4 voice actors that will give me a free session and can do the voices for ATC and Wingmen, BUT since I'm going to modify the audio I figured maybe I can modify the messages a bit as well to help with the immersion. Here are some of the messages from ATC: A.D.F. your heading check landing gear. clear for startup cleared for visual, contact tower cleared hover check cleared to land cleared to taxi to runway continue taxi fly heading go around runway occupied go to alternate. hold position. orbit for spacings. taxi to parking area. traffic bearing negative. unable to clear for takeoff you are above glide path. you are below glide path. you are on glide path. you are cleared for take off when ready you guys will recognize the messages from flying in DCSW and you'll be able to picture in your head the full messages coming from ATC, the question is: Out of these messages should any be changed? should the wording be any different or should any words be added? for example, "Taxi to parking area", you get the message after landing, so should it be: "Taxi to parking area, welcome back" or maybe "Please taxi to parking area, watch any surrounding traffic, welcome home" maybe "unable to clear for takeoff" can be "unable to clear for takeoff, hold for further instructions" I'm not a real life pilot, I have no clue what ATC should be telling you, originally I was going to just redo the exact scripts with new voices but if there's anything that can be done to improve this I would love to do it. All I know is that based on movies, videos online and even hearing radio chatter at the fire departments (though it may not matter), I don't think the DCS World ATC has the right feel Any help would be appreciated to bring some new life to the ATC. Hey Diveplane, do you know if the current audio engine runs on on a separate thread? i remember reading that a new audio engine will run on it's own thread. In my case I will be keeping all audio files at the same size so they should not add any extra load but it's a good thing to keep in mind. So far I've been doing a lot of testing to make sure I have a simple work flow for when i record with the voice actors, for example: There are 3 audio files per digit, 1-Begin, 1-Continue and 1-End, that's from 0 to 9, when you hear a number like 237 it uses 2-Begin, 3-Continue and 7-End to make it sound like they are being pronounced one after the other one correctly. the best way to get the best pronunciation is to record the voice saying 1-1-1, the problem is if you say them too fast they connect too much and when they are cut into 3 files they don't sound natural so each has to be pronounced just right for them to sound natural. Tonight I'll be recording the FEMALE wingman and this weekend a male wingman, zzzspace gave me some great ideas and I gotta thank him for it. One of the main things I've been trying to figure out is how to add breathing sounds to the wingmen but we'll see how this works based on zzzspace's ideas. ATC will be the last thing to record, while i already did a recording with one voice actor, he gave it way too much of a southern accent and i picked somebody else. If you have any ideas or any good links to combat radio chatter please post them here, thanks! Druid_ Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Nero, sounds like an interesting project. That's a lot of recordings! Of all the ATC sounds in ENG/Common/ATC I would keep them as they are apart from "go to alternate" which IRL would more likely be "Divert to alternate". Or "Divert to alternate, airfield closed", a reason would normally be specified but not essential in DCS. It would be great if you could add the following Vacate runway Next First Second Third Fourth Fifth Turning Taxiway Exit On your Left Right Straight ahead To Rearming area Proceed and follow follow-me vehicle You are Approaching Descent point Mile Slightly Left of centreline Right of centreline Correcting continue Using trigger zones on airfield & triggers it would be possible to give players/clients taxi & runway exit instructions and with lua I could create a PAR gnd controlled approach talk down. i7-7700K : 16Gb DDR4 2800 Mhz : Asus Mobo : 2TB HDD : Intel 520 SSD 240gb : RTX 2080ti: Win10 64pro : Dx10 : TrackiR4 : TM Warthog : ASUS ROG SWIFT PG348Q
Frogisis Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Awesome, good luck with this. I looked into those sound files and can tell this is quite an undertaking. Looking forward to hearing how it comes out. For when it goes wrong: Win10x64, GTX1080, Intel i7 @3.5 GHz, 32GB DDR3, Warthog HOTAS, Saitek combat rudder pedals, TrackIR 5 / Vive Pro, a case of Pabst, The Funk

Hey Druid, I've been looking at lua files to see if I could find where the sounds are put together, I was doing this so for example i can add a good morning or good night message to the ATC clearing to start engines, maybe a have a good flight from after you are cleared to take off... If you have the knowledge to make changes l that that'd be great! Nero 27" iMac, 3.4GHz i7 Quad Core, 16GB Ram, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2Gb, Running Bootcamp, Windows 7 Home 64bit, Saitek X-52 Pro
badger66 Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Declare emergency , followed by an instruction from ATC to clear the runway and alert the emergency services would be cool .
Druid_ Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 "fire services are standing by" "fire services are on their way" "fire services in attendance" yeh lua files can handle sounds.
