For those who want a more challenging but more realistic start here is the procedure from the Mustang manual.

Have ground crew pull prop through several revolutions. (This is why the Mags and Battery were left off earlier.)

Battery switch ON (If no GPU plugged in and I dont think there is an option for that here)

Oil and Coolant Radiators OPEN. (This was to be done manually to check the operation of the switches and so the ground crew could hear the motors running to check for correct functioning). To do this, move the mouse to the right of each switch until you find a label that says OPEN. Then left click and the switch will move to the right. Hold the left mouse button down to keep the switch to the right, as it is spring loaded. Release after about 17-20 seconds. Repeat for other switch. Leave in manual.

Starter ON. (After some experimentation I have found that the following works best for me. Use the HOME key to activate the starter with the middle finger of your right hand, while positioning your mouse over the BOTH selection of the ignition switch. Hold starter down.)

After prop has swung through 2-3 blades left click mouse switch to select mags to BOTH

Quickly tap the Delete key with your right forefinger to turn on the Fuel Boost Pump.

Quickly press and momentarily hold the Insert key with your right forefinger to flip on the Prime Switch

When the engine fires Mixture to Run with either a mouse click or use the LCtrl+M combo.

Oil pressure (triple gauge lower right corner of instrument panel) should come up to 50 psi within 30 seconds. If not shut down.

This is much more complicated than the training mission and takes a lot of practice since it sometimes requires doing two operations simultaneously, but it can be done and I find it ultimately more rewarding.

Again, please give me some feedback. And if you have anything else you would like to know, since I have the manual I may be able to look it up for you. The next two posts will be up by tomorrow.

After reading your post there seems to be some good information in it. But where things really start to get confusing is where it seems your fliping switchings in the wrong order or trying to do them all the at same time. Alot of this dont need to be done at the same time. Just needs to be done in the correct order. Such as turning on the master switch first, then turning on the fuel cut off switch second. Third switching on the fuel boost pump. 4th turning on the magnetos to both. 5th priming the engine. 6th turning the engine over with the start switch tell it starts to fire and then switching the fuel mixture from idel cutoff to auto. Liten to the engine purr and be happy while it starts up. I will add this, not sure if this is correct or not for the sim. but for a scramble mission i find that if you add 5 to 10 seconds with the oil diluter switch you can lower the innital oil pressure in order to take off and climb. Of couse as the engine warms up to operating temp it will evaporate the fuel from the oil.

I've seen many Mustang starts IRL that do not involve much ground crew interaction other than two or three which used ground power. I have never seen any ground crew touch the props on a Mustang during a start. I assume that there is some combat consideration for doing so, which precludes that of the well-maintained operation of most civilian owned Mustangs.

If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

Pushing the prop by hand is usually done for radials to clear the lower pistons of oil, because using the starter when the lower pistons are still filled can cause a bent rod or worse. I've never heard of this being done in a inline engine. You shouldn't turn the mags on before you have counted 6 blades when starting for reasons of lubrication, but this is not done by hand.

I somehow got lost in the middle of this thread, and would like to know if:

1) When in SIMULATOR mode, using SHIFT-P to turn the pilot visible in the cockpit, using the Cheat LWin+Home / LWin+End makes the automatic engine start / stop visible with the pilot actualy moving the control and switches ? Mine doesn't.... He's lazy....

2) The ground crew rotates the prop and we can see it's animation

3) The ground power can be used to start the P-51, and there is an animation.

If the answer is Yes to both 2) and 3), how can I enable it?

P.S.: This is really not important, but would be nice to have....

You forget...

4) when I stop engine my visible pilot Shift+P gets off the aircraft and go to bar for a drink with RWin+RCtrl+Lalt+RTab.

You didn't saw that animation? :)

No, that's not in the sim.

This is not done for inline engines. You only do that with radials.

Ground power can be used to start the plane, but there is no animation. You activate it from the Ground Crew Submenu of the radio menu.
