fitness88 Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 What exactly does an orthogonal roll mean? How do you perform it? I long time ago I saw a Locon Video showing a wing over wing [aileron roll] of more than one rotation in what looked like a barrel roll...is that an orthogonal roll? Anyone have a link to a video? Thank you.
Pilotasso Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Turn to put the missile on your 3-9 line and then roll to iverted position and then pull the stick as hard as you can to defeat the missile. It requires above than average skill to pull it off because you have to guess the missile proximity to do the timing right. Doing it too soon ar too late...KAboom :) .

Guessing the direction from where it comes is not difficult because the SPO can help with active missiles. I think you were responding to my other post...thank you.
159th_Viper Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 How do you perform it? High-G pull + Aileron, either left or right. In other words, stick hard back in either the half-four or half-seven position. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Click me to commence your Journey of Pillage and Plunder! GGTharos Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 It means it is perpendicular to something (in this case, the missile's plane of flight). To execute it, put missile on your 3-9 line, and when the missile gets close, if you can see it, pull up/down hard (you may prefer down, as in inverted, to maintain speed) and keep constantly pointing your wing at the missile (so you are rolling all the time). Stop the roll when the missile flies past you, regain your SA. Don't forget to also deploy counter-measures, and if you cannot see the missile, do your best-guess ortho-roll timing. One very important thing is speed. If you are too slow (below 400kt), you probably don't have enough energy to use an ortho-roll. What exactly does an orthogonal roll mean? How do you perform it? fitness88 Posted December 17, 2012 Author Posted December 17, 2012 Thank you all for your valued input...now to go work on it.
104th_Crunch Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 One other thing. If you are in a RUS jet, than you can use the RWR to get the distance of an active missile tracking you pretty accurately. For ex. you can wait until there is 2 bars left on the RWR to light up before preforming the roll.
GGTharos Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 Yes. You could go by IMN but IAS is much more 'in your face'. Generally you want to be in a flight regime where you can pull max g and hold it for at least a couple of seconds. 400kt IAS?
