I have recently installed Windows 8 Pro (32bit) as well as buying the P51 module in the sales fro the website.

When trying to start any module the mission (mostly training ones) screen appears. On pressing to commit the loading screens appear. I get to "loading ground units" then the loading bar resets and then progresses about 2/5ths of the way along before DCS stops working. I get the Windows error box telling me this. The sim then goes back to the mission page at which point I exit.

Crash logs attached.

Sorry for asking but why the hell would you install Windows 8 and then a 32bit Version?

ED recommends the usage of a 64bit OS and there are lot's of threads regarding the problems, which a 32bit OS may cause. So for that matter, consider these.

If it is not caused by the 32bit OS, then... well let's sort out the OS thing first.

EDIT: As your crashes indicate an "access Violation" try run DCS with administrator (right click ... run as admin)

Unless I'm severly mistaken, "access violation" refers to the memory address issue, linked to your "first hypothesis" i.e. the 32 bits limitation.

------

Griffin,

32 bits = 4GB of addressing capabilities only. Into must go RAM but also VRAM and a few other things.

You own 4 + 2 GB of RAM/VRAM (hardware), your OS limits you to about half what you got AND makes you have other problems with DCS (32 bits app & 64 bits app are not the same, and the 64 bits version is better).

My advice would be simple: Seriously consider moving to a 64 bits OS.

Windows 8 in itself is not an issue, AFAIK. Our dedicated server runs (and runs pretty good) with Windows Server 2012 which is the server version of Win8 (64 bits). ;)

Cheers

From a Programming Point of View, Lets take a Look:

The 4GB (3.5GB Usable GB) Limit Imposed by the 32 Bit OS will be a Problem. you can have 4 GB of Ram, but the Boot up Sequence will automatically Allocate Memory Addresses to Devices, which will take up most of your 32-bit addresses.

So You have the GFX Card,

Then you have the CMOS ROM (16MB in mot modern boards),

Then you have Sound Memory (4mb for most VIA HD whatever chips),

And Anything else with Build in memory Addresses.

So: Without any detailed system specs, i can say that you'd have issues with alot of games.

4096 MB, Minus the 512MB 32-Bit Binary Formatting = 3584

3584 - 1024 MB VRAM = 2560 MB

2560 - 16MB CMOS = 2544

2544 - 4MB SPU RAM (Most boards that use the Onboard VIA CTxxxx Auto have a 4MB Memory Address.)

2540, Booting windows 8 with default processes will take up about 40% of that,

So, 2540*.40 = 1016 MB, 2544-1016 = 1528 MB Free,

That doesnt count how much Windows 8 holds and reserves for Other processes

Or how many Memory Addresses are allocated to USB Devices(usually 32mb avg), Harddisks (about 32mb avg), CPU Cache (usually around another 16MB)

That isnt enough free memory to do load DCSW Assets.

Now if you have a 2gb, 3gb, 4gb, or more GFX Card, it makes matters worse,.

For Example, If I were to try and Boot a 32 Bit OS on my current system I wouldnt even be Able to get to the Desktop, or the splash screen for that matter

4096-512 = 3584

-3072 MB GPU

-64 MB SPU XRAM

-16MB CMOS

-64MB HDD0 Cache

-32MB HDD1 Cache

-32MB HDD2 Cache

-16MB HDD4 Cache

-16MB HDD5 Cache

-128MB to I/O Addresses for CPU and USB Addresses.

(This also doesnt count leaving my 640mb 8800 GTS SSC for PhysX in the system).

I'd be 156 MB in the hole for memory address and the O/S wouldnt even boot,

As soon as it starts windows loading It crashes with one of several memory access violation related blue screens

Now, If I remove the GPU and place a Older GPU w/ 1GB or less the OS would boot fine. with about 800 MB of Usable Ram.. (dirt slow too)

Thank you all for your responses.

I'm trying the increaseuserva trick and will let you know if I do not succeed.

I would love to put 64 bit on my system, but I have so much stuff on the 32 bit that I'd be here forever reinstalling programs and downloading 64 bit versions. The latter leads me to another question ( I know it's in the wrong forum but hey, I'm on a roll :smilewink:), I have the 32 bit DCS products. How do I get the 64 bit without coughing up more cash?

Make a Virtual Machine image,

Load Win8 64 Bit, and Use VMWare to Run the 32-Bit Version in A VM Environment. or Just Dual Boot.

The Installers should have both 32- and 64-bit binaries.

You would be amazed how much of your 32 bit software still works on 64 bit... and... do you really need all that installed stuff?

Tip: If i have to go through a re-install i only install the stuff when i need it. Gets you up and running quickly and keeps a lot of bullshit of your system until you actually use it for the first time.

Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!

Thanks again for your support. The memory fix doesn't work so I may have to bite the bullet and go 64 bit. What a pain.

Up to speed now with Win 7, 64 bit. I still only have 4GB of RAM (more on the way) but it works a treat.

Had my first look at the Mustang...drool. What a beautiful plane (not as smart as the Spitfire though :smilewink:).
