Yes, once BS2 is activated (doublecheck that you can fly the shark to be sure), you can uninstall BS1.

If your bs1 is not the steam version I would recommend deactivating bs1 to save an activation

How would that save him an activation? Deinstallation does not cost you an activation.

Unless he has a PC malfunction/upgrade. I'm always safe with my bs1 serial since I'm down to my last one and you never know what's going to happen down the road. I know can get another serial but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
