I've had a few crashes due to flying too high and the rotors icing up and the training videos I've watched discuss using the anti-ice, etc depending on the outside temp but they don't explain how to check this.

By accident, I've just discovered a gauge in the roof marked Outside Temp but every time I've looked at it it's on 20c so is this just for decoration or does it actually work? If not, how else do I find out the outside temp?

Look up at the ceiling of the Ka50, there is a round dial with one arrow that since DCS World 1.2 (or there abouts) works and shows you the outside temp.

Edit: yes you see it, so in the newest DCS World this gauge works and is not always at 20c.

OK, thanks. When you say the newest DCS World, what version did this gauge start working at? I think I'm one update behind as I heard there were some problems with the last update and didn't want to break it when it's mostly working well.

EKRAN warns when icing conditions occur. Since it's anti-ice and not de-ice, just turn rotor anti-ice on when it says so.

Thanks, that's useful to know.

I'll check the gauge again as well. Maybe the missions I've been trying have all had an outside temp of 20c ;)

The PVI-800 there is a button you can push to see the outside temp. It's location is on lower right second button to the left.

Cool, thanks for the tip.

dont rely too much on the temp-gauge at the ceiling... right now im flying some campaign missons with snowcovered ground all around... and it shows about 15 degrees

Mission editor let you set any temp you want (defaut is 15 or 20 deg C I believe) and season. But since they are not related in the game, you can have snow covered ground and +35deg C outside temp. This gauge has long been requested and indeed works perfectly since 1.2.2 (thanks ED!). It's a critical piece of information for icing, but also for your chopper capability to fly high and to hold stationnary. It will dictate how much fuel and/or weapons you'll be able to take with you. Very low temperature will require your startup procedure to last a bit longer since oil temps will take longer to reach the 45 deg C min before you can push your engines. Not respecting the temp WILL wear your engines much faster in the game with a higher risk of failure during your mission. You'll see that temp is a very important parameter in this simulation.

Actually, I think that button gives you wind speed and direction, not temperature.

Ah, yes I recall a button that does that so if that's the one he meant you're right.

Thanks for confirming the gauge works. I'll check it's working on my installed version by setting something up in the ME.
