I have the mustang but trying to get to 20,000 feet is a porblem.

I have not be able to 20 thousand feet. I have gotten to 16,000 but just do

not have enough power to get further. I have the black stick on left side all the way up and try not to go over 5 degrees up and still power goes down from 100 to 50 or less. I have tried six times and nothing.

Need help so I can move on.

Thanks Jim

Hey Jim,

If you set 2700 RPM and 46' manifold pressure, and climb fairly strictly at, and trimmed for 170 mph, you shouldn't have any problems reaching 20+ K feet, so long as you don't have external stores onboard...

I can't recall how quickly the MP (Manifold pressure) changes but you'll probably need to increase the throttle (only) to keep it at 46 MP at various points, as you climb (and as air pressure reduces, obviously) - But when the high blower kicks in your engine will rev and you'll need to reduce it again, to that setting. The RPM setting / prop speed will not change unless the MP falls too low.

This mission was difficult for me too until I found the culprit in the manual.

The engine loses power between 14000 - 20000 ft because the supercharger is in low blower mode. As soon as you reach 20000 ft the automatic switches it to high blower mode and you have power again.

You should manually engage the high blower supercharger mode at 14000 ft and then you'll have no problem going up to 20000 ft.

Sorry that did not work. This mustang need more power to any altitude. I tried quick missions and still at 5 degrees I still could not get any altitude and never at 170 knots. That was a ground attack. I also could not find on controls how to release my tanks under wing. I found no controls saying release tanks or weapons.

Any one have any other advise, as this plane is about as slow as it gets. I have tried Easy and the other controls but makes no difference .

Thanks Jim

How exactly did you engage the high blower mode of the supercharger?

Please post a track so we can see what's going on.

(at the 'de-brief' page, hit save track, note where it is, then upload the track here.)

Cheers.

Jim, on start up when you move the mixture lever forward, make sure you RIGHT-click - the handle should be in the 45 degree angle towards you - if it's pointing vertically down, you have left-clicked it and it will go to Emergency Rich setting. This will limit your power above 14000ft.

Other than that... good luck

The power setting used is a mix between maximum continuous @ 46 in, 2700 rpm , and maximum cruise @ 36 in, 2400 rpm (on lower altitudes). Throttle and rpm locks used. note that these settings will lower on throttle as you go higher, and as supercharger kicks in. Took me about an hour and a half to complete. Watch this acmi (skippable) to see my IAS, bank angle and nose pitch.

Basically, 200-250 mph max, 150 mph min. pitch setting 500~1000 ft per minute. Circle around as you skip the marker (you'll always be lower if you are doing it right). Use pitch indicator to maintain positive rate and watch for mountains.

Something to motivate:

@ 27,900 ft or 29,700 ft....

Takeoff at 298 degrees with wind 214, more right rudder trim needed.

As usual, lower than gate... note speed, pitch angle and rpm setting.

Fuel economized. Just left tank used for the entire flight.

Mission 7

I got to 20,000 then ran out of gas, turned on right side but never could get the power back. MPH was down to 50 to 100, rpm was increased to max which put the manifold to 60, and the rpm went to 30. Suppercharger was in auto and which to high not much difference.Fuel Booster was on all the time but just could not get any higher. When I dropped the noise I still could not increase MPR.

Thanks for the help

Try this. Take off, gear up and trim, get the speed up to 270 mph. MP to 60, RPM to '30', and climb at that speed.

If the speed drops, lower the nose. If it gets higher, climb faster. After 15 min swap tanks L for R (rinse and repeat).

How high do you get before you run out of gas ?

(just tried it (just from the runway, not actual mission 7. Wasn't concentrating and did empty one tank, but got it re-started - that's the did in the vapur trail...) 29min from take off to 9538m ~ 30,500')
