Hey guys, long story short.

Got a 256gb to on my mac with only the OS on it, i was going to put windows on my additional windows 7 on the hard drive but now i want to try and add it to the SSD as well.

Its windows 7 home premium, i want to get an idea of what the minimum size for the partition can be to run windows and DCSW with all the current modules installed including lock on, m thinking 60gb but im not sure if that will fit it

Can any of you give me some suggestions? I also read about using a ram disk but im not sure as to what to do just yet, any advice woukd be great

Also, if i was to go with a ram disk, does DCSW ever use more than 8GB of Ram and how big is the DCSW instal folder without mods?

I run 2 60gb SSD's One for me OS and the other for DCS, however if I was just using it for DCSW one 60gb would be fine.

But I always wish I had gone for a bigger drive for my OS

Hi Neroroxxx.

Well, Windows 7 ultimate is about 20Gb which is the highest install (with SSD optimization (hiber.sys, swap etc.. which add your total amount of ram in a system "Disk Image").

DCSW is about 9Gb, and "about" 500mb per module. (50 for CA)

If you plan to use another HDD or partition to save more Windows Files, 60GB will be more than sufficient.

About RamDisk, on mac you have makeramdisk, on Win, you have ImDisk, a freeware which creates unlimited dynamic ram disks like on Mac.

I've used this method but there's some bad sides :

i've seen DCS over 4GB active ram, Win7 is about 2GB, add a 10-12Gb RamDisk, and your system will be struggled. Especially if you deactivate the swap, virtual memory...

Don't forget it will add latency too.

You will be forced to duplicate your install at each startup.

A SSD imho, has already a very good loading time.

Nota Bene, a 60Gb will not let you record movie at high bitrate like an uncompressed codec.

Thanks guys! Im going with 70Gb for windows, the reason im asking is also because before i had 100gb for windows and i had like 10gb available with windows and dcsw installed, i did have helios installed and irtrack, also i had in the past bs1, lock on and fc2 also falcon bms so im guessing there were files left from those programs that were taking up space, im installing windows now so hopefully everything will go well

Also Erforce, i bought a 128gb ssd to replace the optical drive with but after hours trying my mac wont boot from an external dvd drive or usb drive so im putting the optical drive back in, im returning the ssd but im going to get 32gb ram instead and maybe then i can instal windows on the hard drive n use a ramdisk on windows for dcsw.

Did you guys enable trim on the ssds on windows?

SO i installed windows, i checked and between my program folders and the bootcamp drivers i looks like im using 12gb of space, yet it says im using 31gb i did a right click on folders and checked their size and the sizes don't add up, i think this is what i was dealing with before, hopefully i'll find a solution

Muhahahahahaa*** Dr Evil

YEP, that's what i warned you about (can i say this in English?) :D:D

If i had 32Gb RAM, after a fresh Win7U install, it would take about 50-70GB.

I won't quote myself, but i said "with SSD Optimization"

i read a very good french review about this, and, fortunately, the writer has excellent French skills, so Google Translation should perfom very well.

Here the ENG translated review

Some personnal infos :

-Download folder : well... your choice.

-Windows AHCI : not possible on a Mac without tweaking registry, bootcamp and some other stuff. Please PM me if you want to try. Max bandwidth will be about 210MB in IDE mode, Max performance with AHCI mode.

-TRIM : not without AHCI. Useless if your SSD stay with Win+DCS. Useful if you start to fill/empty memory cells (ie :abusing the trash).

- Index (spotlight-like) : I didn't de-activated it.

- Save points : deactive this !

- Deep Sleep : For the mother of god, please kill this aweful feature.

- Swap File : Set a 500MB swap on your SSD. Windows will be happy and never yell at you.

- Defrag : Never Defrag a SSD. (it's a Multi-Cell RAID0)

- Prefetch/Superfetch : well, you will load Win in 11 secs. maybe 10s will make you happier. As you wish.

- Image stickies : i'm ok with it, and it looks cool.

The 2 reds lines are the main cause about your system over-sizing. It's mandatory.

Hope that will help. Welcome in the dark side. :P

Edit : Oh by the way

I didn't understood, you reinstalled your optical drive, and installed Win on a HDD ?

When i built my PC, i forgot to buy a DVD drive :) Windows loaded successfully via a 4GB usb stick formatted by a Microsoft specific tool. Then i screwed the install (it's a hobby, check my signature :)) and Windows install didn't worked anymore via the usb stick. It wanted a DVD-ROM, because i had an optical drive installled Oo

If you talked about a fresh MacOs install, Disk Utils + 6GB "anything" (USB/SATA/ATA/FW/Network) will let you install anywhere. I've just upgraded my MacPro to 10.7 today. (Noooooo ! SL ! please come back !)

I set my Temp directories within windows to a specific HDD, cleaning it out every now n then.

I used a 128GB SSD for Windows, ARMA and DCS. Still got 52 gig left. Although larger mods for ARMA are on a separate drive.
