I'm just starting out this sim and I have a couple of questions for mapping controls. I have the Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog and the TrackIR5.

First, under options and controls...there is a window to select A-10C Game or A-10C Sim in the upper left corner. I think it's labeled "Layer" or something like that. Which do I choose? What's the difference.

I got the TrackIR to work and I re-mapped the trim hat back to trim as opposed to cockpit view. What should I map the "center view" (for the TrackIR) to? I thought I read in an earlier post that people were using the boat switch on the throttle. Is that the right one to use? Do you map it as going forward or aft? Or pushing it in?

What about rudder? I would like to use the friction control knob at the top of the throttle quadrant but can't figure out how to map it.

Thanks for the help.

Hi shmn, welcome to the forums!

I will try to help with some of that:

1: A-10C game or sim - you can play DCS-A10C in either game mode, or sim mode. Either mode has it's own set of controller options. Most folks, if not all here, play in sim mode - which is the harder mode. Game mode is more of an easy, arcade style of play. So if you choose to play in sim mode, just make sure any controller changes you make in the options, you have the A-10C Sim selected. I believe the DCS GUI manual does pretty good at explaining the differences in sim and game modes. I have a feeling you want sim mode, especially as you invested in the Warthog.

2: Track IR recenter command - well I believe there are two buttons that are free by default on the Warthog setup - the paddle switch on the stick, and I believe ( someone correct me if I am wrong) the mic up swich on the throttle. I myself saved the paddle for a modifier in the controller options should I want to use a modfier, so I assigned mine to an extra mouse button on my Logitech G400 mouse.

3: That friction knob, at the top left of the throttle quadrant, is not a mappable axis - that is actually the tension adjustment on the Warthog throttle itself.

Now, the INCR/DECR grey slider, on the right hand side of the throttle, is a mappable axis, and not assigned by default in A-10C. I myself have that assigned to the zoom function.

You can probably get by using the key commands for your rudder, but for even more immersion escpecially as you now have that nice Warthog setup, consider getting some pedals at some point in the future - ones with toebrakes are really nice. I have the Saitek Combat Pedals wich work very well for me.

Hope this helps, and have fun!

Hi shmn, welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the helpful reply. I just got the hardcopy manual in the mail from lulu and I'm going to sit down and read it. I'm sure this game will take me years to figure out as I don't have a lot of free time. But, it will keep me off the streets. ;)

I wouldn't use the boat switch because it's already mapped. Personally, I hardly ever use BHOT in the TGP (you'll probably figure out later what that actually means :)) which is boat switch forward, and go for WHOT instead (boat switch aft), but in some instances I've found it easier to identify targets in BHOT mode.

More importantly, you might accidentally set the Mav to Force Correlate when returning from TrackIR center. I'd go with Don's suggestion or stick with the keyboard (I use the default F12 key for TrackIR center).

Mic Switch up may be a good idea, but I've reserved that for TeamSpeak Push-to-talk (a rather obvious choice, methinks).

What Don said.
