So where's RO at nowadays, anyone played it lately? It was touted as the most realistic infantry sim when it first came out, but have they kept this up? Just asking, because I'd like to try my hand at this kind of thing again after a long break...

I play RO2 now and again. It's not realistic and fairly different to the original RO but still kind of fun. It's a fairly fast paced close quarters game now but there's a few user-made maps that are starting to use bigger areas to play over. Arma would be a better bet if you wanted something more realistic though.

Thanks mate, gotta check ArmA out - never played it before. S!

I bought RO2 when it came out. Good fun for I cant remember how long, maybe a couple weeks before the servers were empty and people had moved on.

It was the biggest waste of game money in recent history as I like online. The game wasnt bad but it had an exceptionally short online lifespan.

Oh, cliffs of dover was the worst waste. Never even got on MP with that.

Actually there's normally 60 + people on the ATAG CLiffs of dover server most weekends, it's a bit slow during the week buts that too be expected really, its the only server to really play on but its a good one with a good bunch of guys too, I try and get on every weekend and with he new MOD patch due out in the near future it's only gonna get better in my opinion.

But ah yeah RO2, bit of a shame really, it could get quiet tense online, I had a lot of fun with it till it was very quickly left by the vast majority, maybe not COD/battlefield enough for most people :/

I played RO2 and I was pretty disappointed, it's not a "full sim", there's some arcade features that I don't really like and make the game too easy. Also I found the weapons handling a bit too scripted but that's only my opinion.

If you never played Arma, you should then! It's what you can call an infantry SIM, with mods like ACE and ACRE you have something which is amazingly realistic and the sound mods are ... gold.

I don't recommend buying Arma 2 now of course, stick with the Arma 3 alpha to check it out!

If you want I can give you a key for the "lite version" which will allow you to play as a guest for free before buying the game. Just say me if you want it. It will be a Steam gift available from the 14 March to 18 June 2013.

Thank you for the offer, much appreciated. But I think I'll pass - too many things on my plate ATM with work and other RL chores to actually concentrate on anything new just now. But thanks again, very nice of you regardless :)

And thanks everyone for your opinions on RO2, too. Not my cup of tea it seems... S!

Actually, I thought RO2 had a few things going for it:

- The cover/peeking mechanics are in many ways better than ARMA. They're scripted to orient around the cover you're using, as opposed to ARMA where you just control your body position, and the cover doesn't feature (absolute vs relative I guess) ARMA 3 helps here with the much better body position control, although it's still an 'absolute' method.

- The weapon mechanics (ie how you actually manipulate the controls of your firearm) seems better in RO2. In ARMA (even the new alpha), you just reload as usual. In RO2, since there is no magical round counter on your HUD, you can check the chamber, reload individual rounds in rifles that support it, manually work the bolt in bolt action rifles (handy for shot observation through a scope, you can see where your shot landed in most cases without waiting for the scope to finish jumping around as you work the bolt, once that's done, then work the bolt), and it generally simulates the difference between the magazine and the chamber of the firearm.

Of course I normally don't really like online play in general - so the single player of RO2 is a bit of a waste, but it's a mindless way to pass a little time. ARMA is a much more complete experience though, by a massive margin. I find online play with ARMA a LOT more fun, mainly due to the much higher levels of teamwork. The new Alpha is looking really good. Get it.
