O.T. Someone Help...

Ok sorry to post this here but most of you guys are good with math i assume. Well this might be a simple problem but i can not figure it out for the life of me.

 

My daughter has a story problem and I am stuck. I know shame on me but usually I am pretty good at story problems. But for some reason I can not figure this one out. So if someone can help please do.

 

Here is the story problem.

 

5. The total cost of a chair,desk, and lamp is $562.00. The desk costs 4 times as much as the lamp, and the chair costs $23.00 less then the desk. Find the cost of all three items.

check:

 

if anybody has a clue the help would be great.

I know this one: solving...

 

You have to make an equation system. trying to solve it by mind is a pain, here it goes:

 

{C+d+L=562

{d=4L.....................................................just as the story says, then:

{C=D-23

 

from the 2nd equation you get: L= d/4, you dont even have to mess with the 3rd so this results in the following replacing the 2nd and the 3rd on the 1st:

 

(d-23)+d+d/4=564<=> 2d+d/4=585<=> 8d/4+d/4=585<=> 9d/4=585 <=> d=4*585/9=260$

 

Replacing this on the 2nd it gives: 260=4L<=> L=260/4=65

 

replacing again d on the 3rd it gives: C=260-23=237

 

Did this in 1 minute, hope its right:biggrin:

D = 4 * L => L = D/4

 

D = C - 23 => C = D + 23

 

(D+23) + D + D/4 = 562

 

D+D+D/4= 562-23

 

9D / 4 = 539

 

9D = 539*4

 

9D = 2156

 

D = 2156 /9 = 239.555

 

C = D + 23 = 262.555

 

L = D/4 = 59.89

EDIT - D'Oh! me bad! Can't read properly. Chair© is 23 LESS than desk(D) not 23 more like I did.

I'd prefer this way:

Desk = x

Lamp = y

Chair = z

 

x = 4y; 0.25x =y

x - 23 = z

 

substitute y and z into x:

 

x + 0.25x + (x - 23) = 562

2.25x - 23 = 562

2.25x = 585

x = 585 / 2.25

x = 260

 

 

Desk 260

Lamp 65

Chair 237

 

Total 532

a = lamp

desk = 4a

chair = 4a - 23

 

a + 4a + 4a - 23 = 562

 

9a = 562 + 23

a = 65

 

lamp = 65

desk = 260

chair = 237

How old is your kid? I also have a younger sister and I get the impression the teachers are giving out problems far to advanced for the kind of the math tools already given to them. My sister used to have this kind of problems when she didnt even knew what an equation was. As you can gess one would scratch the head ALOT in this situation...

my older daughter who is 12 is doing allot harder math as she is in gifted program at her school. She gets about 4 hours a day of home work and I look at that stuff like you got to be kidding me.

 

Things have changed over the years.

 

My wife is really smart with math and science and she gets confused on some of the things they bring home as well.

sorry for my ignorance I got kicked out of school for being a pain. Got my GED and a good job so I guess I can not complain.

 

For having nothing more the a GED i have a job that I make over 80,000.00 a year so go figure. Allot of guys that have graduated and went further in school have not been as lucky so to say around here.

 

do no take this as I want everybody to quit school. I would go back and do it right if i could.

Wow you got smart kids, congrats. They had the genes from your wife it seems LOL.:biggrin:

 

When I was 12 I hardly did 10 minutes of homework everyday, but then we didnt have anything stimulating as a personal computer like today. I only got a spectrum 48K like I was 12 but it was too primitive to use calculus sheets or any other form of graphical interface. Today kids just wanna model stuff for games . ;)

LOL ROFLMAO, you know something? you would make a good engineer, we make that kind of kneepad aproximations in 3 secs and just feed it into the simulation program and ITS DONE!!!

My kids are real smart it is kind of scary. They are learning things in school that I never did. Its fun to see some of the stuff they get and for them to teach me for a change.

Pilotasso - that is so funny! I have been a Software engineer on Radar, Air Traffic Control, Military Comms, etc for the last 25 years. You would be hard pressed to fly anywhere in the world and not be within radar coverage with some of my software. Scared yet ? ;) Of course at work, I always take my time and drink a lot less :p

 

Dont worry Pilotasso, you are safe in Portugal, none of my stuff down there. Did a presentation to the Portuguese Air Force back in the late 1980's of an Air Tasking / Mission Planning system I was working on, but they didn't buy it.

I think we went for the Israeli stuff. We got lots of equipment from them...probably because yours was better but we are always short on cash LOL:biggrin:

 

Certainly it is interesting what impact in the world a single engineer can have. Congrats for your software. I can only hope that my future job be as rewarding as that. Untill then I still have a research project before finishing my course.
