Pika Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 To answer the original question i'd absolutely LOVE to see an Apache, and last I heard it was in development, but then everything dropped off and now we're hearing about Huey's and F\A-18s and the like. No mention of an AH-64 :( [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Kameni Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 Uhm... I don't think that chimnies are modelled so that they actually have a hole. It would explode on touching the top of it.
Luzifer Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 Yes you could, and when I'm rich and famous and I commute to work every day in my surplus Russian Ka-50, that is exactly how I'm going to ditch my empty coffee cup every single morning. Imagine it: hover over the starbucks parking lot at 100m, rappel down using the yet-to-be-modeled sling hook wearing the should-be-modeled cape and goggles, get in line, purchase coffee, then rappel back up. This is how I will commute >=D Does/did not the DCS Ka-50 have some issues with the auto hover spontaneously disengaging? Does the real Ka-50 have some similar issues? You know it would be real awkward if it happened while you stood in line at Starbucks. :D

Luzifer Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 In movie land, everything that flies makes a Stuka sound when it's diving. Also in movie land, every pilot religiously trims as nose heavy as possible at all times so that their vehicle will immediately dive as soon as they let go of the stick.

In some provices of the movie land, the vehicle will not experience any g-forces no matter what you do. Also, it is absolutely possible that your aircraft just stops in the air and then begins to fall down. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Ham Sandwich Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Ok, this is how you could do it. It would take two of you to accomplish this: You want a lazer return shining on the inside bottom of the chimney, but you can't laze it yourself from a launchable angle. It has to be done from straight above the chimney, right? So, you get your buddy to hover straight overhead of the chimney, lase the bottom of the inside of the chimney, then you lase the top of the chimney (using same laser code as buddy) from a horizontal angle, and launch. Wait for the missile to climb, then when its over the target and going vertical (and buddy's laser becomes visible to the missile), you turn off your laser, and let it go after buddy's. Too bad that chimney isn't actually hollow. This would be fun to try.
cichlidfan Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Too bad that chimney isn't actually hollow. This would be fun to try. Look at the picture again. It is basically a cup which is actually better for your idea than if it were an actual chimney with a furnace, or whatever, at the bottom. However, it would still be rather difficult to pull off, I suspect. BBQ Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 (edited) What led me to create this thread -- I've been re-reading Ed Macy's Apache: Inside The Cockpit Of The World's Most Deadly Fighting Machine, and he apparently was able to force a hellfire to hit a target from an abnormal trajectory -- in his case, if I understand it correctly, he put one down a Taliban tunnel in Afghanistan by pitching the Apache's nose down (basically put the Apache in a perpendicular position to the ground) and then firing the Hellfire while the weapon's officer in the front seat stabilized the lase on the target. The Hellfire didn't have time to completely straighten-out -- in effect forcing a trajectory on the weapon so that it wouldn't hit the lip, or side of the inside of the hole, but rather go straight down it, exploding 10 or so feet down on the floor of the tunnel. I'll try to make a diagram of it if I have some time -- Edited April 15, 2013 by BBQ
seikdel Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I remember that chapter. I was grinning the whole time =D For those who haven't read it yet, Apache is a phenomenal read!
