Pikey Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I hit a Huey full in the face with the (tow?) missile (don't recall its name) from a T90. It struck and the Huey showed physical damage on it's nose, but otherwise and apart from an evasive manouvre, continued flying. I'd expect it to be unflyable, although i'm not an expert. I'd at least expect the crew to have made a mess on the floor, if not be a mess on the floor. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
howie87 Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 (edited) I'd at least expect the crew to have made a mess on the floor, if not be a mess on the floor. Lol! Yeah, I doubt a real Huey could take an ATGM to the face and keep flying. Those things are supposed to take out tanks... I noticed the Huey seemed a little tough when flying against one in the hog. Poured a fair amount of 30mm into one and the damn thing kept going. Still beta though so hopefully they'll tweak the damage model before final release. Edit: According to wikipedia the Refleks missile (fired from the T-90) can penetrate 700-900mm of armour... so I imagine it would make quite a mess of the Huey IRL. Edited May 7, 2013 by howie87

Remember that High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warheads are not the same as High Explosive (HE) warheads. The former uses high explosives to direct energy to a small single point (and therefore cut through armor). The latter uses high explosives for it's blast/fragmentation effect (in an omni-directional way). I'm not suggesting that a HEAT round wouldn't screw up a Huey's day but I'd guess it probably wouldn't rip it to shreds System specifications: Computer, joystick, DCS world, Beer
Pikey Posted May 7, 2013 Author Posted May 7, 2013 Well this is why I wondered, its an odd weapon to use, for sure. But I can't help thinking it should have looked worse than it was and perhaps either the damage of the agtm or the resilience of the Huey is a bit off. The pilots also need nerfing....they came back at me again :) ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
shagrat Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I guess the actual damage of a shell or bullet depends on where it strikes. If for example you hit the mid section of the Huey with an APDFS round (high velocity, armor piercing penetrator) it will sure rip through the door the passengers and out through the other door and make a bloody mess in the compartment, but not inflict any major damage to the machines...:D I agree that you can put some amount of HE Bullets into the Hueys tail or center and have, lets say less damage as expected. whitehot Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Remember that High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warheads are not the same as High Explosive (HE) warheads. I'm not suggesting that a HEAT round wouldn't screw up a Huey's day but I'd guess it probably wouldn't rip it to shreds In fact, the effect on the Huey's (and any other AC) should be devastating. As soon as a heat round hits the a hard surface, the "jet" (a mixture of incandescent gases, traveling at supersonic speeds) is projected out of the round tip, into the target. The jet passes then through armor, melting it. When it reaches the interior (the huey's cockpit, in this case) it expands, and rises the temperature up to about 3000 deg. celsius. This should brew up all the internal ammunition stores, fuel and the like. I don't even wanna think about what happens to the crew, but it should be pretty obvious. So basically, from what i got reading around, an helicopter hit by heat should explode not unlike as if it was hit by HE. I must say that I too noticed that the UH1 seems a little too "rugged". I tried a mission in which i flew in the mid of some armored vehicles with 12.7 and 14.5 mm HMGs, took several tens of rounds from them and got only marginal damage. Also, all the glass surfaces were crippled and broken by the bullets, but the crew was left totally unscathed. I would say that this heli has got no armor at all, so even 7.62 and 5.45/5.56 bullets should puncture it quite easily. So imho, the DM needs some tweaking, but I'm sure the devs are aware of this situation [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Intel i7 6700K @ 4.2, MSI M5 Z170A Gaming, NZXT X61 Kraken liquid cooler, PNY Nvidia GTX 1080 Founders Edition, 16GB Corsair Vengeance 3000 Mhz C15, samsung 840 evo SSD, CoolerMaster 1000W Gold rated PSU, NZXT Noctis 450 cabinet, Samsung S240SW 24' 1920x1200 LED panel, X-52 Pro Flight stick.
