It would be nice if hitting Trimmer Reset would override having to return the stick to center, and immediately return control to the stick, after pushing Trimmer switch with central position trimmer mode option selected.

e.g., Flying along maneuvering to line up a landing and I accidentally hit the trimmer switch, after a good 'duh' (actually a more expressive exclamation) I hit the trimmer reset switch. Normally I really like the "Central Position Trimmer Mode" option but in this case I left little ripples in the water before I realized that even though I had released the trimmer I had to return the stick to center.

Since the central position trimmer mode is an adaptation to make pc simulation hardware more workable there is no loss of realism to override it if the trimmer release overrides it.

My advice:

Uncheck central trimmer mode and get in the habbit of trimming very frequently.

That will eliminate all the crashes caused by accidential trim and not returning the stick fast enough.

The erratic "jump" of the helicopter when trimming and moving the stick to the center will only tell you that you didn't trim often enough.

Trim for the smallest adjustments and you will find the "jumps" being very small and gentle if present at all.

Soon you will see trim reset is not needed at all, too.

Ever since I did that in BS1 times, I haven't had a single crash because of the necessity to always center the stick again in the heat of the battle or when hugging the terrain.

My advice...

Thanks for your advice. Think I'll just continue to use the flying style I'm comfortable with and ask for this somewhat logical change.

If we're adding a wishlist for trimmer features, I'd also like to request that a time-delay be added to the central trimmer mode - after nnnn milliseconds restore input control regardless of input control positions.

i'll second einstein proposition as an option.

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

AFAIK there is a line burried somewhere in lua that can set this time delay... Try to search somewhere around the forum :smilewink:

You're right, there should be an option to set this time in the in-game settings

doesn't that defeat the whole point of the central trimmer mode?

In central trimmer mode, cyclic and rudder inputs are ignored by the sim until all of those inputs go to zero. The good side of this is that there is no control bump when applying trim. The transition is buttery smooth and looks great in the hands of a pilot who is experienced with this method. The bad side is that many folks (myself included) are experiencing a complete control lock out when one control (usually rudder for me) isn't zero enough, with catastrophic results. For me this happens pretty infrequently, but it only takes once or twice to make it completely frustrating.

My suggestion is to add a timeout to the central trimmer mode such that if the controls haven't met the "zero" criteria after some period of time (say, 1 second), then start listening again anyways. There will be a control bump but I think that's preferable to the control freeze. If folks didn't like the fact that they could ever get the bump they could set the timeout to something ridiculously large, like 5000 seconds, and the trimmer would function exactly as it does now.

Heck, if you also added a configurable constant for the "controls at zero" deadband, and a non-central-trimmer pilot could set that to 100% and get the same results as the non-central-trimmer mode. You'd get both trimmers in one!

Act now and we'll throw in another trimmer AT NO COST TO YOU! (Just pay the shipping and handling fees of $49.95...) ;)
