Hi.

So i have created a little practise mission to take out multiple targets in on pass with gbu-38s.

I locate them with the tgp and have it set to latch-on to manual fire the laser to get the most accurate ranging then i store as markpoints. But when i turn the laser off after marking i can not turn it back on. Does the laser have a cooldown like the SU-25?

And is it necessary to use the laser for accurate ranging with the tgp?

Any chance the pod is looking "over the shoulder" and masked by its aft components?

Especially if you're just shooting the laser to get an accurate SPI / Markpoint... it doesn't overheat that fast- You'd have at the VERY least 12 seconds (recommended laze time for LGBs)...

If there is a cool down period, it would be my first lesson of the day.

I don't think you need to use the laser for ranging at all, seeing that the fire control computer can calculate the slant range just fine by using data from the DTSAS and EGI systems.

The computer only has knowledge of the terrain. When you target an object, you know that you are looking at a building/vehicle/etc. The computer, however, is looking through that object at the ground beyond. You need to lase the target to give the computer an accurate distance measurement, which will then give it an accurate target point in 3D space.

Maybe a track could help? Only time I know of when you can't fire the laser is if it's being masked and you can tell by the little m on the TGP screen and I believe one on the HUD as well.

This video should explain it a bit better than I ever could.

I think i had the targets on to much of an angle as was said earlier in this thread, even though the tgp could see the targets and i get a picture in the mfd, i could not fire the laser. So i turned the aircraft more towards the target area an then i could turn on the laser again.

Thanks for all the tips. :)
