I have this quick, simple mission that proves a little hard: I put a strela in the midst of some other vehicles, and I have a JTAC lasing it. The idea is to kill the strela, but somehow the Mavs always lock onto other vehicles, giving the strela a good shot at you.

Mission starts in the air to keep it simple. The JTAC you need is the second one, EagleEye on FM 30.

Any tactics suggestions?

Mav should only lock onto the vehicle you tell it to. Make sure your Mav screen is SOI, zoom in, then lock on to the correct vehicle.

As for the JTAC lasing, why? You didn't say anything about using it to find target and Mavs don't use the laser for targeting.

Post a .trk file and we can tell more easily what is going on.

Maybe use force Correlate mode if the mav snaps to a nearby vehicle after locking. (Did not play the Mission)

Aside from what bonsai mentioned, why are you still flying straight at it after launching a mav? I didn't have any difficulty locking onto the strela. And yeah, the laser isn't needed. The JTAC puts you pretty much directly on target anyway.

Problem is the visiblity of the vehicles in the Mav seeker is to bad for me to see the difference, that's why I was counting on the laser. So my TGP locks the right vehicle, but when I switch to the Mav, slave it and lock, it locks on surrounding vehicles.

I'll post a track.

I made a track that shows the "difficulty": the JTAC lases the target. I scan for the laser, track, and verify that I lock the Strela with the TGP.

Then I slave the IR Mav, even in magnified view and can't see shit, so I lock. You see that the Mav locks a little beside it. I fire the first Mav, it hits the wrong vehicle. My second Mav locks a little bit to the left, and gets the Strela.

I find it a little tough since the first four times I tried I got toasted this way. Don't get me wrong: nothing wrong with the game, I just wonder what is wrong with my tactics.

So OK I don't need the JTAC to lase, but then again whatever how I ID the Strela with the TGP, the Mav locks something else.

watched the track, you slewed to the strela , locked too early nearby Tank had better contrast for Mav seeker, so it snapped on that, you failed to reslew again to lock Strela instead. 2nd Mav shot you were closer and Mav seeker snapped to the now better visible Strela.

Watched the track, that is a tough situation, and not one I'd set myself up for. You are flying very low, much lower and closer than I'd attempt. At that angle, you're basically looking at the sides of the vehicles, and anything between you and your target is going to block the view to your target. You will still get a laser target using the LSS, but that doesn't mean you have a clean, clear shot. I would recommend flying higher staying further back. However, it's your mission. One thing you will want to do is to change your left mfd to the tgp so that you can get a very clear view of the target area. Use the LSS to find the target, but then use the TGP to fine tune it. What you could do is fly left/right and use the TGP to see if you can get a clear view to the target BETWEEN other vehicles. If you can do that, your MAV will likely have a better chance of hitting the one you want. I only watched the trk as it was, so I don't know what the angles involved were. I'm guessing you had several vehicles bunched together from you line-of-sight and your mav just hit whatever. It isn't laser guided, only image guided, so if the image isn't clear enough to SELECT the target you want, it's not going to hit it. If you could get some type of seperation, using the TGP as a guide and flying left/right to get your target cleared of other vehicles, you might stand a better chance of hitting it. CAn't now, but I'm going to try just that tomorrow.

hello Foss, Evil.Bonsai,

Thanks for the comments, I think indeed I have to look and wait for a clearer image for the Mav before trying to lock it. In another copy of the mission I come in higher, with less problems and risk, but here I wanted a setup where I would come in low.

I just flew the trk just after your LSS finds the target. After taking control, I turned right, changed LMFD to TGP w/RMFD set to MAV. I zoomed in to max with the TGP and saw the Strela and made sure the TGP was locked to that. Set MAV as SOI and zoomed in there, turned towards target. Once taget was visible to mav, I tried to lock and it jumped from the Strela to the truck. Set TGP as SOI again, slewed all the TGP then back to MAV as SOI. I was getting closer so MAV image got clearer. I could clearly see the Strela just to the left of all the trucks so tried locking the MAV again, got it and fired 2x. Both Mavs hit the Strela.

At that point the Mav was SOI. If I had tried to slew all to SPI, would it not have slewed the TGP to what the Mav was locked onto, since the Mav was now SOI and what it was locked onto a new SPI? I was pretty certain that how it worked.

you don't need to go back to the TGP if it moves off the strela as it doesn't change the spi. Just reset the mav to the SPI by holding down 'v'/china hat forward long. and try to lock it again. As you get closer the seeker should have an easier time of actually picking out the target it's been placed on and it won't jump.

I think I actually locked an infantryman, but when he's leaning on the target smoking a cigarette it hardly matters.

Smoking is bad for your health, really. I'll see if this guy can help me out also with the Strela :=)
