Horizon Line Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Don't get me wrong, I love this sim more and more. :pilotfly: Here we go, just me there, in my first mission of the day (not multiplayer) in a nice winter morning in Republic of North Ossetia, west of Mozdok. After neutralizing the air defences of a medium sized convoy (14 ~ soft + armored targets) i go in a dive with rockets and guns. I shoot 6 rockets in a dive with no more than 10 degrees of bank and maybe 20 degrees of vectorial descent. 1 second later (8:49: 2 8 pull nose up 3 degrees, small GAU8 strafe on a BTR-80 (~ 2500 - 3000 ft, ~ 290-320 knots). Changed target to another BTR-80, a little more than 1 second long trigger pull (altitude ~1300ft?, can't tell much from this point. Speed increasing, throtle 80%~). While no visible splash yet from the second strafe I pull the trigger close to a third target, not the ideal by the altitude left as it was pretty low, but it is for fun after all. As soon as start shooting on the third target i see 2-4 flashes on the side of the second BTR-80 (longest shooting), right at this moment my screen blacks out, I freeze thinking the game crashed, betty came with her third pull up message (should've heard the girl), I know I'm screwed, without seeing nothing i pull the stick without much effort mesmerized of what happend. Couple of seconds latter my pilot's vision starts to come back with the tunel vision effect. Too late. 1 second to crash. :joystick: Stick pulled, belly first. Explosion. Attached debriefing Screen Shot of the last seconds. Saddly this was one of those you, mistakenly, don't hit the save track button. _________________ ___________________ ____________________ PC Performance: Absolutely no stutter during dive, nothing heavy running in the windows background. Everything safe. Old trusty fella Core2Duo E7500 stock clock + PNY 670GTX 2Gb VRam + 4 Gb DDR2 Ram. Win 7 professional 64 bit. Mission performance at 30 to 60 fps. Mods running: -Horse of War A-10C cockpit. -Generic airport high fidelity textures (taxiways and runways) I don't really have the mod name in hand right now. -And that's it. I don't really know if I should put this on the Bugs session as I might guess it was a 30mm rebound but I can't really tell if it's possible either IRL or modeled in the sim. Sorry for this possible incovenience, I just thought it would be worth posting either for bug fixing, simulation features awareness, and the most, WHAT THE EF HAPPENED ? Good Flying :) -Horizon Line
kk0425 Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 My best guess is that one of the High Explosive rounds detonated close to the ground and you got hit by just enough of it to confuse the debriefing log. Even with a track that would be hard to explain.
DUSTY Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 I can't exactly help you but I got a good laugh from the thread title! WildBillKelsoe Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 maybe a round ricochet onto you when you pulled up... For best view, get tacview to see what went wrong. Also, if friendlies were along the attack axis, the bullets may have travelled there by mistake (hence the excessive nose dive you hear people talking about) AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.
Horizon Line Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 (edited) maybe a round ricochet onto you when you pulled up... For best view, get tacview to see what went wrong. Also, if friendlies were along the attack axis, the bullets may have travelled there by mistake (hence the excessive nose dive you hear people talking about) Yeah, I thought about that for a while. I still find it hard to believe a ricochet directly where it came. Maybe one in a thousand. As I got two failures on the right wing, maybe the HE round exploded in between of the wing's tip and the cockpit knocking the pilot down. Still hard to picture it. :suspect: Edit: There were no other friendly birds attacking. My wingman was along my path at my 5, not rolling hot. (AI) I can't exactly help you but I got a good laugh from the thread title! haha don't mind. My best guess is that one of the High Explosive rounds detonated close to the ground and you got hit by just enough of it to confuse the debriefing log. Even with a track that would be hard to explain. It would indeed, be hard to spot. Well, there was my score into the drain. *giggles* Edited September 1, 2013 by Horizon Line
Flamin_Squirrel Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 ...one in a thousand. The hog carries more than that, so you only need to unload the whole clip once :D
Nate--IRL-- Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 This is one of the reasons Ground attack pilots NEVER overfly targets. The likelihood of getting hit by your own bullets is not as uncommon as you'd think. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
SmokeyTheLung Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Just to make matters more confusing; The HEI rounds never ricochet (in game) afaik. System specifications: Computer, joystick, DCS world, Beer
Horizon Line Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 (edited) This is one of the reasons Ground attack pilots NEVER overfly targets. The likelihood of getting hit by your own bullets is not as uncommon as you'd think. Nate lol yeah, the first thing I kept in mind when I started CAS/Ground attacks. But I thought it was to avoid being hit by enemy fire for maintaining a straight path and close distances, but not own ammunition. Things like these makes me even more enthusiastic about this sim. Edited: I can picture my plane catching a stray round from the first burst impact on a certain angle on that flight, yes. Although it was a HE round. Dud HE round? The game model that??? O_o Thank you for the info, Nate. I'll fly more safely with that tip in mind. ^^ Just to make matters more confusing; The HEI rounds never ricochet (in game) afaik. oh, jeez.... lol *mind crashing* There is precedent for a pilot shooting himself down with his own gun "The F-11 Tiger is noted for being the first jet aircraft to shoot itself down.[3] On 21 September 1956, during a test firing of its 20 mm (.79 in) cannons, pilot Tom Attridge fired two bursts mid-way through a shallow dive. As the velocity and trajectory of the cannon rounds decayed, they ultimately crossed paths with the Tiger as it continued its descent, disabling it and forcing Attridge to crash land the aircraft; he survived.[4][5]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-11_Tiger http://www.check-six.com/Crash_Sites/Tiger138260.htm oh wow... That sounds like it. Maybe that first small burst had hit me, although I saw the burst hitting the ground? I can't really tell. This Tiger episode is golden, thank you for sharing it! :book: Edited September 1, 2013 by Horizon Line
Horizon Line Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 The hog carries more than that, so you only need to unload the whole clip once :D that seems plausible...
ralfidude Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I've blown myself up with my own maverick before, and the Frogfoots still blow up their Sead missiles right after launch sometimes causing damage to them or worse, but this is a first I ever hear of someone killing themselves with gau-8. I think you earned yourself a callsign and a medal sir. [sIGPIC]http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b66/ralfidude/redofullalmost_zpsa942f3fe.gif[/sIGPIC]
AlphaOneSix Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 An alternative thread title for this thread would be "I accidentally with my GAU-8! Is this bad?"
