Hello guys,

I wanted to find out how to acquire the freqs for JTAC. I sometimes see JTAC listed on the multiplayer briefing, but I almost never see what freq it is on.

Is there a default freq that it is always on and is that the reason why some multiplayer servers don't list what freq it is on on the briefing?

My other question is when I have the freq for JTAC and use it, I almost never get a response. I have it on FM and have the right FM freq on the radio. Do I have to be close to a certain location in order to get a response from JTAC, or is that just a bug in multiplayer server?

Freqs for JTACs are listed in the missionbrief. No freqs listed no JTAC available.

You need LOS (Line of Sight) with the JTAC, so yes you have to fly ivo his location. There is no default freq, so every mission with a JTAC has his own freq.

Er...wrong.

If there is no frequency listing, the mission designer may have failed to include it. If you know there's a jtac but need to find the frequency (I've even seen a mission with the WRONG frequency listed), open the mission in the mission editor, find the ground unit that is acting as jtac (might be hidden, but can be unhidden using the group list), most likely a single vehicle by itself near the enemy. You can click on it then check the advanced waypoint properties. Frequency should be in there.

You do NOT need LOS to utilize JTAC. However, for JTAC to provide a target, the JTAC must be in line of site to that target. JTAC has to see target. You do not have to see JTAC.

Other way round I believe. It used to be possible to order the JTAC to give a group without being able to see you. On the other hand there cannot be major obstructions to contact the JTAC. Especially with a weak radio like the FM.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Nope. Works as I said. Just tried it with JTAC on one side of mountain range (or large hills). My A10 was on the other side and contacted JTAC just fine.

It shouldn't. That is a bug.

JTACs don't always have to see the tgt. That's why Type 2s and 3s exist. If a unit is under fire from the north they just have to say that. Let the aircraft find tgts insteading of popping your head out of the dirt.

FM doest have to be line of sight. Although best when that happens there have been more then enough occasions that this happens.

Also, if you have other aircraft overhead that don't have the necessary munitions you can always radio relay to your attacking aircraft all the info he needs so that when he does check in overhead he gets straight to work.

Nope. JTAC only works if they can see the target, otherwise they'll just say no tasking available. And how would you 'relay' to another a/c? The only way I can see doing that is in multiplayer. Certainly no way to do that in single-player.

Sometimes JTACs getting shot from enemies... no JTAC - no radio!

I see it as this: I'd assume in real-life JTAC would stay out of site or line of fire. So any vehicle in the sim performing JTAC should be made 'hidden', since you can't really tell them to hide.

IRL TACP teams are often on the high grounds overwatching firefights or defending a hardened postion (improvised FOB and so on) indeed.

I think setting them as hidden when they're on foot is pretty fair but if they got some vehicles near, it's unfair to the enemy, I mean, IRL a hummer can be spotted quiet "easily" and it will not take a lot of time before the rain of steel :P JTAC being a high value target I guess.

I believe HAWG63 is referring to IRL, not this sim, in which case he is correct. Only in Type 1 CAS does the JTAC have to see both the aircraft and the target.

Which is what led me to make the statement. OP was asking about how it functions in the SIM, and not IRL.

It's nice to know real-world information, sometimes, but it doesn't answer OP's questions regarding the SIM.

It may be a bug, as previously stated, but to contact JTAC in the SIM you do not need to be LOS. And for JTAC to report a target, it DOES need to be LOS.

I personally find it frustrating when someone asks a question regarding the SIM and someone starts putting out real-world information as if the SIM actually functions that way. It can be very confusing to new players.
