emenance Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 http://www.ageia.com/ Check it out . Looks like I will be wanting this for the new Ghost recon. I wonder what plans ED has for this kind of physics? This card works with our current video card GPU and MB cpu to render high tech physics. christopher m Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Physics processor, Very interesting, If it would take some load off the CPU which I am suppose it does. Then it would be a must have. I suppose the software/Sim has to be coded to use the processor ? Yes ? Regards, [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Christopher M
Shaman Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 It's been discussed quite a few times on all flight sim forums including this one. Just do some search :) Ageia PPU or at leasts its physics engine (it can run also using standard CPU+GPU), which is supposed to be better then f.e. Havoc, is something I'm also looking forward to. 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer
Prophet_169th Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Imagine the weather effects :) Flying through clouds. Wing vortices, jet wash. Weapon effects.
Caretaker Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 The problem with such cards is that nobody buys them if no game supports them, and no game will support them as long as nobody has them ;) I doubt that such cards will become a widespread standard without a dedicated API first, maybe as part of DirectX. Which is certainly a possibility; how much that would benefit the more specific flight model calculations that each sim developer does in their own way is another question. But even if it's only for parts flying around after crashes or explosions, smoke or whatever else, it's still a benefit. Caretaker ED Beta Test Team
emenance Posted January 18, 2006 Author Posted January 18, 2006 Ghost Recon is a huge game, these will sell. I hope they dont cost too much :( Asus P8Z68-V GEN3/ 2500k 4.4ghz / Corsair 64gb SSD Cache / Corsair 8g 1600 ddr3 / 2 x 320gb RE3 Raid 0 /Corsair 950w/ Zotac 560TI AMP 1gb / Zalman GS1200 case /G940/
mAxxR Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 next gen gfx cards will use gpu also for physics depends on the hipe, and support by companies
Doug97 Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 next gen gfx cards will use gpu also for physics Which is a shame as it takes transistors away from processing graphics. I really hope these things take off, and by that I mean I hope there's going to be more games that utulise them.
lunanera Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 or gfx cards could turn into 'game cards' with 2 processors, 1 for gfx 1 for physics. I believe with the fidelity sims are trying to reach these days and in the future, a processor dedicated to and optimized for physical calculations will be a necessity.
BBushe Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 well, as one who doubted the original 3D cards, I hope these are as much of a success. I guess like 3D cards, integration into DirectX will be essential to success. 3D cards are pretty much a minimum requirement now, but I can't see a physics card becoming a game requirement for mainstream games. I'd love them to, as I plan on having one... Considering the amount I've invested in hardware, including HOTAS for flying and Wheel/pedals for racing, that the quantum leap physics card potentially offer make them a must have for me. BTW I'm looking forward to GR3, but it looks more like a Sci-fi game to me...they're talking about the sort of things that should have been in Starship Troopers or Alien (2). And of a similar subject, Rainbow Six 4 demo is now out! bb
