I have BS1 hardcopy on disk. I've been happily existing in that world for ages, but now I'd like to upgrade to BS2 for DCS World. Can I upgrade, and if so how, or do I have to start from scratch?

Many thanks

AFAIK you should be able. The english disc version is no different than the onlie version. Same DRM, same serial.

For the russian I don't know. The disc version had a different DRM than the online one. But still it provided the key. It should be possible as well though.

The only thing is that it will probably allow you to upgrade in the same line (english to english or russian to russian).

In terms of what product to purchase, there are 2 options (and whichever you choose, do it while the sale is still on during the next 2 days!).

First, there's the Black Shark 2 Upgrade. Whenever you want to activate it, you will have to have BS1 installed and activated.

Second, there's the Black Shark 2 full version, which obviously doesn't care about BS1 in any way. Other than the activation, the upgrade and the full version are identical.

In terms of how to upgrade: BS2 is an entirely different product from BS1. Both can coexist on the same drive/in the same windows installation, both have different installation paths. (You could even run both at the same time if your system is powerful enough).

In this regard, BS2 (even the "upgrade" version) isn't really an upgrade to your existing BS1, it's more like a new version to complement it instead of replacing it.

In terms of starting from scratch, you will have to make sure your controller configuration is okay. BS2 will not import anything from BS1, neither controller config nor logbook. There are also some changes and differences between the 2 games. But all in all, my transition from BS1 to BS2 was incredibly smooth, BS2 feels a lot like BS1, just better (except for a trim-bump in BS2 that is a bit hard to describe and that some players experience while others don't).

I just got a new computer that will run the P51, ect. My old computer only ran Blackshark 1 (I have the US boxed edition). I bought P51 , Huey, and free SU25 and installed DCS World and those aircraft all work/install fine. I see now that I can get a free upgrade to Blackshark2 but I'm having trouble doing it (my old BS1 reg # does not work when it asks me for the BS2 number). What am I doing wrong, or are you not able to upgrade a boxed edition? P.S. this is not the steam edition. Thank you.

To use the BS2 upgrade, you must have BS1 installed and activated with its key. BS2 also has its own key.

As far as I know, the BS2 Upgrade still requires BS1 to be installed and activated. And as far as I know it doesn't matter whether it's the boxed version of BS1 or the Steam version.

But -- as far as I know -- the BS1 activation code can only activate BS1. In order to activate BS2, you need the BS2 registration code that you should have received when you purchased it (or when you got it for free).

So, with the BS2 Upgrade, first make sure BS1 is installed and activated, then install and activate BS2. If that doesn't work, you should probably go to the Payment and Activation sub-forum. Or, if you feel like spending some money, get the BS2 full version while the sale is still on.

(Errrr... and what Cichlidfan said in fewer words :D )
