ARM505 Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Hi all, I had a go at the (empty, thank goodness!) VVS504 server, my second attempt at online play. I'm curious why the mission loading time takes so incredibly long. I noticed this the first time I tried to go online, on another server, I forget which. Even when the missions are very complex with a lot of objects, single player seems to load far more quickly. I could really get up and go and watch some TV while waiting for the mission to load when I tried online! Is there anything I can do about this? I have 1 Gb of RAM at the moment, would more help these load times? I got a ping of between 380-395 according to the score window ingame. How often is this ping updated? It doesn't seem to update unless something else happens, ie some other value changes like killing a target. Reading the recent post about online play with high pings gives me the impression that this ping is borderline, but still useable. I was hoping for a more updated ping value to check that I wasn't spiking over 400. What happens to custom created loadouts that are saved by myself? Do they remain on the server after I have left? And what about non standard skins? I take it other players would just see one of the standard skins if they didn't have what I was 'wearing', but what if they did have the same skin? And.....on a subject I think may be doomed....(whispers)....any chance of dedicated server software at some stage cough cough....

I got a ping of between 380-395 according to the score window ingame. How often is this ping updated? Reading the recent post about online play with high pings gives me the impression that this ping is borderline, but still useable. I was hoping for a more updated ping value to check that I wasn't spiking over 400. There's a touch of a bug with the pings I think, and yes, it is borderline. Keep in mind that if people don't complain about you warping, you're ok. What happens to custom created loadouts that are saved by myself? Do they remain on the server after I have left? I'm pretty sure they do, in some form or another. And what about non standard skins? I take it other players would just see one of the standard skins if they didn't have what I was 'wearing', but what if they did have the same skin? They'll see the same one IF they have it installed, yes ... otherwise, standard skins. And.....on a subject I think may be doomed....(whispers)....any chance of dedicated server software at some stage cough cough.... Not any time soon AFAIK. Nate--IRL-- Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Lock on uses alot more RAM for online, i don't know why but it does. I use End It All to kill all background programs, and this helps alot. Your Ping is usable but you will really want a lower ping than that. Custom loadouts are saved by you to your computer i think. the only way somebody can see your custom skin is if they have that skin themselves. No, Lomac uses about 100 to 200mb more in multiplayer than for the same mission in single player. Try it yourself. ARM505 Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 Yes, I would really like a lower ping than that! I was just looking for an empty server to get a handle on how things worked online, and the VVS one fitted the bill. I was hoping to get an idea on how stable the ping was, as I know that IL2, which I used to play online very often, is still surprisingly playable when guys have 400 pings (I had 70, they had 400, and it still allowed relatively predictable gunshots), hence my question on the frequency of the ping value updates. I know it's not ideal, but servers are very few and more importantly, far between. Thanks for the answers.

ARM505 Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 No, but I'm on a 64k ISDN line, hence my question in the recent thread on HPB (High ping...people!) being allowed to join, asking what setting was best for me. I got two different answers, but inclining more towards leaving my setting lower (56k). My pings seemed logical, given that I am almost certainly on the other side of the planet to the server. Any further advice? I realise that I will probably not be able to play online, but I just wanted to check things out, and there was nobody on the server.
GGTharos Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Seriously, check it out with a loaded server, and see how many people your connection can handle at once ... then you'll know what to join and what not to join. Join a server and ask if they can see you and if you're warping. A little warping is ok, huge warping is not. VapoR Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Just for the record GG, on the 504 server scenes are set on medium (and have been for quite a while). One day I hope that we will be able to run on high again, maybe when the average person has a system that can handle that kind of setting.

Actually the server can set the scenes to high , clients just have to edit their Lockon\Bazar\Terrain\Scenes to their liking , for example you can make all scenes settings load the low scenes by making 2 copies of Low.scn and renaming them high.scn and medium.scn Don't forget to back up first . I have used that with no ill effects in the past when I felt my computer was struggling . hope that helps a few people [sIGPIC]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/madmaxx69/LOMAC/Rykesig1.jpg[/sIGPIC] Savage 77th , http://s77th.com |Core i7 920|Asus P6T Deluxe V2|GTX 285|9600GT-OC|6G DDR3|Softh on 3x22"CRTs|Tir2|yeahIsaidTir2|X-45|Haf 932|Vista Ultimate 64|
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 i think the amount of ram is one of the main factors, also the linespeed, for example, on meh beast pc, i can load a mission online or offline within 5-15 seconds, now on this pc with same line but with the lower specs and 1gb of ram, can take anywhere from say 30-60 seconds. so its a factor of a few things, and when playing offline, it does it just the same, so it cannot entirely be blamed on a shit inet connection.
Gazehound Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 It takes me ages to load a game on the 504 server, or any server with ground targets. This is because I have lower RAM than most ppl. Also, if I run a mission from the server on my own rig for testing it takes ages too. Some of the missions have lots of waypoints for all the seperate client planes in addition to the ground stuff. I guess the difference for other people from a SP game is that it must load all the current states of the units (location and dead/alive) maybe. Dosent bother me now im used to it. VVS504 Red Hammers
ARM505 Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 I don't think the connection featured very heavily in the speed of loading the mission - it said 'waiting for server' for a few seconds at the end, but that was right at the end, and the HDD had been going mad the whole time up till then. Thanks S77th-RYKE for the good tip.
ARM505 Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 As a matter of curiosity, where is the VVS504 server physically located (just a general idea, no specifics needed)?

Thanks, coincidentally I had just read that thread the minute before checking this one again! In any case, I didn't seem to have a problem with timeouts, but I did change the settings. Thanks.
