Vedexent Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 (edited) So, I'm trying to work through an Su-25A mission, where there are lots of mobile ground targets; it's an armored advance of American units on Tbilisi (from a randomly generated mission). I can fly just fine, and I'm reasonably successful against ground units when I can find them. The biggest problem I'm having is finding mobile ground units. Even spotting them on the F10 map, I find myself cross-crossing the landscape trying to spot units - and more often than not, when I find them and circle back to strike, I can't find them again. So ... all you experienced Su-25A pilots - what am I doing wrong? Am I flying too high? Do I just need more practice? Do I need a spotter? How do you find mobile ground targets? edit: for anyone reading this thread for solutions, also check here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=111286 Edited October 14, 2013 by Vedexent Found a sister thread
Nate--IRL-- Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 Use the Zoom (Pretend you have Binoculars if it helps) - plan your attack in the mission planner, noting all relevant Landmarks to help you find the area of your targets. Adjust your waypoints as necessary (add a waypoint over the target area for example). Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading

Is possible modify my flight plan in Mission? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Nate All things I'm doing ... so it's sounding like I just need to keep practicing, rather than expect I'm going to find a "magical" tactic to make those armor units pop out of the background (other than enabling labels, of course). Appreciate the feedback.
Vedexent Posted October 13, 2013 Author Posted October 13, 2013 Hi, I have a question about that. What is the Mission planner?? Mission Editor?? Is possible modify my flight plan in Mission? After you hit "fly" in the Mission editor - or load the mission - you get the briefing screen. At the bottom, near the "fly" button, is the "Mission Planner" button. I don't think you can alter existing mission waypoints, but you can add new ones between existing ones, and "fine tune" the mission to some extent.

RagnarDa Posted October 13, 2013 Posted October 13, 2013 when I find them and circle back to strike, I can't find them again. Carry a smokemarker pod (S-8 TsM) so when you find them, imediately mark them with smoke. Try looking around you and orient yourself and target in relation to big and easy to spot landmarks like hills, lakes, cities... Also, go easy on yourself - fighting in the Su-25 is hard! Thanks - smoke is a good idea. At least it gives me a point to start looking again. And yes the Su-25A is hard - but that's the fun part :D Learning to do something with the Su-25A imparts a real sense of accomplishment ... plus I think it'll be good practice for more modern aircraft when battle damage blows out those "new fangled" systems like autopilots and HUDs. :smilewink:

Vedexent Posted October 14, 2013 Author Posted October 14, 2013 (edited) The advice worked - especially the smoke. Can't say I'm eagle eyed picking out all enemy movement like a raptor on high swooping in for the kill ... but I'm starting to pick some out, and mark them for later passes. Another thing I've found - I was way too impatient. It helps if the front lines have joined; it's much easier to spot a firefight, or a self-propelled mortar firing, than it is an APC moving though trees next to the river. I guess that's why the Grach is close air support and not an interdiction aircraft. Edited October 14, 2013 by Vedexent typo
lmp Posted October 14, 2013 Posted October 14, 2013 Try to remember your ingress and egress headings and estimate roughly how far you're going away from your target. This way you'll be more precise with setting up your next attack and you'll have a better idea where to look for the targets.
Lanzfeld Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 I can spot tanks and such but spotting infantry is IMPOSSIBLE. I guess that's realistic
RagnarDa Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 I can spot tanks and such but spotting infantry is IMPOSSIBLE. I guess that's realistic Yes I think so too. The soviet designers probably thought "who cares about infantry when you have a gazillion tanks?". Normally the targets would be marked or otherwise communicated to the pilot (see this thread) and the Grach would act more like a flying artillery. Also, hunting enemy artillery, besides tanks and fortifications, is probably the main job for this bird. DCS AJS37 HACKERMAN There will always be bugs. If everything is a priority nothing is.
Lanzfeld Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 When I release my wingman to attack ground targets he seems to spot and attack the infantry when there are tanks and such right near the infantry. Wingman has FAB250's and S-25 rockets. Why attack infantry when the tanks are right there? Is it because his weapons are unguided?

Is it because his weapons are unguided?Perhaps they should make the menu more fine grained like in the P-51D. When you fly the P-51D, you don't just tell your wingman to attack ground targets. You can tell him to specifically attack tanks, artillery, trucks, anti-aircraft. I don't remember seeing infantry but maybe it's there.
