Having seen these CastAR glasses which can do augmented reality and virtual reality I've been wondering if they could be utilised in DCSW in any way. I do think they look less cumbersome and awkward than the Rift, even if the VR isn't quite as immersive but I understand they intend to have different lenses to increase the FOV from 90 to 100-110 degrees anyway.

Aside from VR, I'm wondering if the AR side could be used to project the cockpit in front of the user (with the main view on a separate monitor or projector), which he could then interact with, flick switches and so on with his hand. The headtracking would have to move both the main monitor and the AR projection in sync of course.

So what do people think? Perhaps you can you think of some other ways to use these with DCSW?

I went ahead and pledged for one. At the very least DCS World will have some form of 3rd party compatibility via Nthusim HMD for both Rift and CastAR. The reaosn why I suggest third party compatibility is after a certain point in the next few years there are going to be a good half-dozen viable HMD options on the market. Eagle Dynamics committing to only one HMD is not good for the customer base. It's also why I had Immersaview start development of Nthusim HMD last year.

Exciting times ahead for simming with the Rift and now Castar on the horizon! IMO the Castar has the most potential for flight sims. Potentially allowing the user to place the retro-reflective sheeting material as required (imagine a dome or 180 degree arc of material). Or if you have a cockpit frame built with window panels, you place an arc of 180 degrees of the reflective material behind your window frames and put on the glasses for near total immersion. The kicker for me is that you will still see your surroundings, keyboard, mouse, checklists etc. Augmented reality vs Virtual reality! Bring it on!

I wonder if the CastAR, at least in AR mode, will allow us to use our hands to flick the cockpit switches, which would be really cool and a big advantage of VR-only systems like the Rift.

Imagine, no more need to use keyboard commands or mapping (and remembering) commands to nondescript joystick buttons!
